It is a pleasure to open our 32nd season at Spivey Hall, renowned as one of our nation’s finest small concert halls. Featured is an outstanding chamber quintet by one of America’s most distinguished artistic figures - Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Harbison, Songs America Loves to Sing, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, was co-commissioned, premiered and recorded in 2007 by the ACP. These ten “songs” alternately showcase each of the five instruments in solos and canons spotlighting familiar American tunes, hymns and political anthems - ranging from “Amazing Grace” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” to “We Shall Overcome”. Throughout our performances to date of Songs - in Atlanta, Paris and Rome – we have been inspired by this music’s beautiful and original accompaniment settings, as well as awed that John Harbison can skillfully craft a double inversion canon over a fixed harmonic scheme… while we enjoy the “St. Louis Blues” in a whole new light. The concert begins with the graceful lyricism of Mozart’s only quartet for oboe and strings and presents the Atlanta chamber music debut of oboist Elizabeth Koch, the new Principal Oboe of the Atlanta Symphony. Concluding the program is Gabriel Fauré’s sensual and brilliant C Minor Piano Quartet, a long time ACP audience and musicians' favorite.

“ SUAVE & SEARING “

MILHAUD Suite for Violin, Clarinet, Piano, Opus 157b
JANACEK String Quartet no. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”
BRAHMS “Horn” Trio in Eb Major, Opus 40

Paula Peace, piano • Laura Ardan, clarinet • Richard Deane, French horn
Justin Bruns, violin • John Meisner, violin • Catherine Lynn, viola • Brad Ritchie, cello

Frenchman Darius Milhaud's Suite is a suave and jazzy trio setting of the traditional suite of dance movements, followed by Moravian Leos Janacek's searing first quartet, inspired by a Tolstoy novella of jealousy and murder. Anchoring the program is German Johannes Brahms' beloved "Horn" Trio, composed after the death of the composer's mother and featuring some of Brahms' most arching melodies and galloping rhythms. This program marks the ACP debut of John Meisner, first violinist with the Atlanta Symphony and former violinist with the Herrington Quartet in Texas.

The Ahavath Achim Synagogue’s beautiful Srochi Hall will be the site of this season’s popular “Chamber Music in Sacred Spaces” series in a tribute to the musical capital city of Vienna. Franz Josef Haydn’s sparkling E Minor piano trio opens this program with charm and delicacy. Johannes Brahms’s beloved trio for violin, horn and piano features some of the composer’s most reflective and resplendent writing and showcases Justin Bruns, the ASO Assistant Concertmaster, and Richard Deane, ASO high hornist, with pianist Paula Peace. Concluding the program is Carl Maria von Weber’s quintet for clarinet and string quartet and gives ASO Principal Clarinetist Laura Ardan a lyrical and virtuosic showcase.

"MODERN MASTERS"

DEBUSSY Sonata for Flute, Viola & Harp
MARTINU First Piano Quartet
SCHOENBERG Kammersymphonie, Opus 9, arr. Webern

Paula Peace, piano • Christina Smith, flute • Laura Ardan, clarinet
Justin Bruns, violin • Catherine Lynn, viola • Brad Ritchie, cello
Elisabeth Remy, harp

We are proud to inaugurate “Chamber Music in Art Spaces” to showcase the best of contemporary chamber music while surrounded by works of renowned visual artists. This collaboration takes us to the Museum of Contemporary Art of GA, in their new location at TULA Art Center. The program showcases three brilliant works from the 20th century. Frenchman Claude Debussy’s masterpiece Trio features sensual and luscious writing for the flute, viola and harp, with ASO Principal Harpist Elisabeth Remy joining ACP regulars. Bohemian composer Bohuslav Martinu’s quartet is a bold and breathtaking tour de force for piano and strings. Arnold Schoenberg’s early, ultra-Romantic Kammersymphonie - arranged for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano – explores a wide range of emotions and tone colors, all with a power and intensity which make this work the climax of Schoenberg’s first period of composition.
