By: Tessa Hebert, © 2001 Although Candace Weddle's disclaimer on her CD states that it is a work of fiction, Candy's Story is am alarming true story of child abuse. The most-horrendously brutal acts of her mother upon Candy and her siblings is recited in a matter-of-fact way, flowing from the author's memories, allowing the reader to come to the realization that only someone who experienced such abuse would know how it really was, or understand why Candy told her story. The author's own horror of what she writes is overcome by her need to tell what happened to her, and she warns her readers to discontinue reading at any point it becomes too depressing to continue. This book is an honest attempt to tell the
truth about subjects that are so often not spoken about and denied:
The author's story includes her memories of the men her mother murdered and includes details of her mother's involvement with "organized crooks." The author's disclaimer that her story is fiction is probably the only part of her book that is not true. It is my opinion that this book is the author's
therapeutic effort to recover, that her story must be told in order for
her own self-recovery to begin, and she was so horrified by her own writing,
that she was afraid her readers would be too traumatized to continue reading.
So, she sets her worst fantasy at the very beginning of her book, almost
as if she preferred that the reader would be scared off before reading the
rest. The first page, titled The Dream/Vengeance is Mine,
is a rendition of her fantasy about doing to her mother what her mother did
to her, and it ends with this:
Anyone who has suffered abuse will understand why and will probably be most grateful that the author was courageous enough to share her story, so that other survivors of child abuse can realize they are not alone, that someone else survived too. Someone else knows the insanity of the abuse and survived not only to tell about it, but to describe it in great detail, which makes it all the more believable. I agree with the author's warning. If you have been abused, it would be better to get counseling and get into recovery before reading this book. It is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who are in denial about the horrors of child abuse. |
