Solomon (the world’s wisest man) gives us his golden nugget in Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV): “… Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.”
(It sounds kind of stark; one may ask “is that all there is?”. Personally I like the simplicity of it.)
John, the apostle of Love, leads us from obedience into
joy: John 15:10-11 (NIV): “If you obey my
commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's
commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so
that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
(Ah now it becomes clear. How many of us struggle to find joy? How many are struggling in their own power to fight sin? Here, we see the joy in obedience.)
Knowing we have an all-powerful God who loves us and cares for us is the source of our joy. Our knowledge of God’s love for us determines our joy in life.
