Course Requirements
Since this is an experience-based practicum, each student
will be required to participate in all course activities as follows:
- Attend classes as scheduled and
participate in class discussions.
- Read textbook and do other assignments,
if any, for class meetings.
- Observe a "first class".
- Observe at least two experienced
instructors (in addition to 7701 instructor) teaching undergrad psychology
courses, and submit a brief, typed report on what was learned from the
observations by Monday, January 28th.
- Observe 1101 class sessions being taught
by fellow practicum participants as scheduled. Give constructive written
peer feedback no later than the end of the day the session was taught,
with a copy to 7701 instructor.
- Do teaching assignments as scheduled,
including preparation and individual supervision with 7701 instructor.
Obtain feedback from 1101 students via student feedback forms (form
available online, may be modified as desired). Obtain peer feedback. Have
at least one teaching session videotaped.
- After each class period taught, make
brief presentation to 7701 seminar and discuss what was learned based on
student, peer and instructor feedback, as well as self-feedback from
viewing videotaped session. Integrate insights and ideas based on the
McKeachie textbook and any other material covered in the course.
- Submit a brief but thoughtful typed final paper summarizing
what was learned from the teaching experience and during the practicum, by
the last class period, Friday 25th April. Content and format
are unrestricted, the paper is intended for the student to cycle through
the experiential learning process and also to have a personal resource for
later teaching.
Required teaching assignments:
Practicum students will take on increasing teaching
responsibility as the semester progress:
Segment 1:
- During this segment practicum students will focus on
observing a variety of experienced instructors, reading textbook
assignments, and learning about the Kolb model of experiential learning in
addition to the basics of lecturing in an undergrad psychology class.
- Each student will deliver a brief (approximately 10-15
minute) segment of a lecture.
- Students will grade the first homework assignment (summary
report of an empirical study in psychology) according to predefined
criteria, and address issues of grading, including interrater reliability.
-
Segment 2:
- Each student will deliver an 1101 lecture prepared with
planning help and supervision. The assignment includes the following:
- Prepare the class session using the
Structure Sheet provided on the 7701 website, with help and supervision.

at least 48 hours before the session.

additional class handouts needed.
- Distribute Student Feedback Forms at
the beginning of class and obtain written feedback from the 1101 students
at the end of the session.

the next test, based on the class presentation and the 1101 textbook.
- Have individual feedback/supervision
session with practicum instructor which includes setting developmental
goals for next teaching assignment.
-
- Students will attend 1101 classes and
act as peer observers as scheduled, submitting written constructive
feedback for the peer-instructor by the end of that day (with a copy of
the feedback provided for the practicum instructor).
- During Segment 2 students will jointly
develop criteria for and grade Homework 2, a practical assignment based on
learning theory.
- Each student will make a brief presentation to the 7701
class integrating their teaching experience and various types of feedback
received with relevant teaching issues covered in the course or arising in
the classroom.
-
Segment 3

and executing one class session, with instructor assistance as desired.

-
- During Segment 2 students will jointly
develop criteria for and grade Homework 3, a practical assignment based on
intelligence.

in report to the practicum class.
Final paper to be handed in by last
class, Friday, April 25th.
