Introduction to Steve's OEC class in Piedmont (East Bay Area)
Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) is the National Ski Patrol's course for training patrollers to cope with injuries and medical emergencies. While you can use most of what you will learn in any wilderness situation, our training will be based on scenarios that you might respond to while patrolling. We expect you to read the textbook, do the workbook exercises, and come to class prepared. For most of our class time, we will be practicing skills and doing role-playing scenarios. We will also train you to do accident make-up (moulage), and play the role of patient for other students - an exercise which will give you insight into patient care. For major simulated accidents, we will bring in moulage experts and other volunteers to stage the scenarios and play patient roles. By the final practical exam, which will be a series of scenarios, you should be walking, talking, and thinking like a professional rescuer, as well as doing specific skills effectively.
I will use this web site and e-mail to communicate with you and post course materials, including quizzes and handouts. Students who do not have e-mail and access to the web will be charged a copying fee, so that I can provide them with paper copies.
All patrollers must be certified in OEC and CPR, and both certifications must be renewed every year - OEC by doing your patrol's annual refresher, and CPR by doing a challenge or a full CPR course for professionals. There are now three alternatives: American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers, or the National Safety Council CPR course which the NSP has licensed. These courses include all the one-rescuer techniques for adults, children, and infants, two-rescuer CPR for adults, and use of the CPR pocket mask. The NSP does not recognize two-year certification periods.
As volunteer instructors for the
NSP, we must give priority to NSP patrol candidates. We will open the class
to non-NSP students if we have space, after accommodating all NSP candidates.
We must, however, charge non-NSP students an additional fee. For details,
see Registration.
