Rusape, Zimbabwe
secular life
Life in Rusape is generally peaceful, friendly and slow. The town is not a booming business center but during the day it does fill with shoppers who frequent the stores on the main streets that sell groceries, electronics and various sundries. During lunch time men gather in the town’s few restaurants, sipping beers and scooping up chicken stew with generous servings of sadza, a thick cornmeal starch. As night falls families gather for dinner which they hope to finish before the occasional evening power outage, which has become a more regular occurrence as the nation’s economic problems increase and the government can no longer afford to purchase power from neighboring countries. Even after the power returns the streets of Rusape are quiet. Families gather around their televisions to watch national news, which is often followed by American sit-coms or music video programs. People from Rusape realize that their city is small and simple, and though many dream of living in places like the United Kingdom or America, most realize the benefit of living in a town is full of friends and friendly neighbors.
