Namutumba synagogue, about 70 km from the center of the Abayudaya community in Mbale, Eastern Uganda. Namutumba is a village of subsistence farmers who raise corn, cassava and other local crops for both food and to sell at a nearby market or along the road to Mbale. The community is too distant from the center of the community's observance to send regular delagates to services or community meetings. There are no telephones in Namutumba so over the years many community members have lost touch with the rest of the Abayudaya. When Jay was in Uganda a delegation from the Abayudaya Youth group visited Namutumba and was pleasantly surprised to find that while the community's old synagogue had closed, they had built this new one far out in the fields.
