John Maddra, will, 1782

In the name of God Amen, I John Maddra of the County of Surry being sick and weak, but of Sound Mind, Memory and
Understanding, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following: as is first and principally I
recommend my Soul unto the Hands of Almighty God, who gave it hoping, that when I shall be called before the great and awful Tribunal The Intercession of his Beloved Son may bring about and accomplish my eternal Salvation: My Body I commit to the Earth from whence I was taken to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executor hereafter mentioned.
I give and bequeath unto my Children Mecajah Maddera, Rebekah Maddera, Nancy Maddera & Martha Maderra each the sum of Twenty Shillings, apiece to them and to their heirs forever.
I give to my daughter Dicey Maddera the sum of Twenty five Pounds apiece to her and to her heirs forever. I also desire her to have one Feather Bed and Furniture after the death or intermarriage of my Beloved Wife, to her and to her heirs forever.
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Priscilla Maddera the sum of Twenty five pounds apiece to her and to her heirs forever.
I also desire her to have one Feather Bed and Furniture after the death or intermarriage of my Beloved Wife to her and to her
heirs forever. -
I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife my best Horse Saddle and Bridle with the Best Bed and fumiture I possess to her
and to her heirs forever. -
My Will and Desire is that my Beloved Wife shall have the use of my Land and Plantation with all the apportenances and also
shall have profits and enjoy all my Slaves, Stocky and Household Furniture as long as she remains my widow to make her to ??? and Educate my Children who are now with me and underage: After her death, or after she shall intermarriage I give and
bequeath all my Land. Slaves. Stock and Household Furniture to my two sons John and Thomas Maddera to be equally
divided between them if they be both then alive; but if one of them only shall at that time survive. my Will and Desire that the
whole of my Lands, Slaves, Stock & Household Furniture shall go to him and to his heirs forever.
I also give and Bequeath unto my two sons John Maddera & Thomas Maddera all the ready Money I have at the Time of my Death, with all the Debts due to my Estate which I desire my Executors to collect as soon as possible and put the whole out at Interest, to be equally divided between them, when they or either of them arrive at lawful age: But in case my executors shall
think proper at any Time to purchase one certain Tract or Parcel of Land now belonging to Joseph Throp and lying contigious
to my land. I desire they may apply a Part of the Money aforesaid to that Purpose, which I desire may go to them after the
Death, or after my Beloved Wife shall intermarriage, in the same manner as is directed respecting the Land I now possess.
I desire that all my just Debts may be paid and also all Legacies given to my daughters Dicey and Priscilla may be put out to
interest by my Executors for them until they arrive at lawful age or Marry, Then I desire the same may be paid them.
My Will and Desire is that all the Rest and Residue of my Estate not herein before mentioned may all remain in the possession of
my beloved Wife so long as she remains my Widow & afterwards to go to my two sons John and Thomas to be equally divided between them or to revert to the Survivor as is before directed in the Case of Lands, Slaves etc. I also desire that the ready money and Debts given a aforesaid to them the said John & Thomas Maddera may in Case of Death of either of them go to the other. -
I desire that my Estate may not be appraised & I do hereby nominate and appoint my friends William Clinch & James Kee my lawful Executors to this my last Will and Testament and do empower them to execute the Trust re?/oved in them as well as to see to the Education of my young Children. In Witness whereof I hereunto set my Hand & Seal this Tenth day of July Dominic one thousand Seven hundred and eighty two.

At a Court held for Surry County August the 27th 1782 - The afore written last Will and Testament of John Madders
deceased was presented in Court by James Kee & William Clinch the Executors herein named and the same was proved by
the Oaths of William Hamlin, William Dieken and Elizabeth Madders the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. -
liberty granted the Executors to qualify at a Future Day if they shall think fit.

We certify the above to be a true and perfect Inventory of the Estate of John Maddera deceased as far as has come to our
knowledge

the same amount of two hundred and three pounds six sillings and five pence half Penny in Current Money

The ?????? written Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate of John Maddera deceased was delivered by William Clinch
and William Hamlin two oft he appraisers. John Batts the other appraiser being dead William Clinch informed and
made oath that he said John Batts did a list in making the said appraisement and thereupon the Same is Ordered to be
Recorded.
