Rice Medaris
(5) (John Thomas 4, Charles 3, Charles 2, Domingo 1)
was born
about 1745-50 in Middlesex County, Virginia.
Rice married Miss Rachael McPheeters (often
spelled McPeters) on the 18 June 1775. Rachel
was b.
in 1751 according to the 1850 census. She was the daughter
of Charles and Mary Ann McDowell
McPheeters.
Rice is listed in Benjamin Cleveland's (Militia) District in Surry County, NC in the 1774 poll tax. On Cleveland's list for 1775 he is listed with Gabriel Loving and Daniel Sisk, each paying a poll. He is listed in William Reynold's District in 1782 with 11 horses and 3 head of cattle and his name is spelled Mederest. He is listed as Madaris in 1 poll in 1784 and by 1785 he was also listing 100 acres of land. In 1786 he is listed in Alexander Gordon's District with only one poll, but in 1787 he fails to appear. They settled in Caldwell and Burke Counties, North Carolina. He lived in Burke County, Morgan District at the time of the 1790 Census.
On the 21 Mar 1778, Rice is listed as living on an improvement included in an entry made by William Loving (Entry #42; Land Entry Book 1778-1781). This property was located on the south side of the Yadkin River. His name is listed as Rice Moderist. He is listed in the 1790 Burke County Federal Census as Medecarst. (Credits "Some Pioneers From Wilkes County, North Carolina" compiled by Mrs. W.O. Absher)
Other neighbors of Rice were the Davis' possibly the relatives of Rice's mother Rachel Davis Medearis. Probably the most famous resident of the Yadkin River Valley was Daniel Boone and it is likely that Rice and Daniel Boone were friends. Members of both families would eventually inter-marry.
Rice worked as a BlackSmith and was a Private in the Revolutionary war . Rice was "a soldier in the company of North Carolina Militia commanded by Capt. Silas Martin, whose company belonged to the Regiment of militia, commanded by Colonel Benjamin Cleavland" according to his Pension Application. He was first enlisted on the 13 June 1777, and was enlisted for the Cherokee Indian War. Soon after his return, Rice, was again called to action against the Tories. He fought at the battle of "The Hanging Rock", "The Gum ??? Springs (which was fought against the Tories and the British Army), and "The Battle of Kings Mountain". Rice retired from the service in March 1782.
Rice and Rachel had the following children:
- Millie Medaris (6) b. abt 1775, married John Hayes of Watauga County, NC.
- William H. Madearis (6) born in 1781, married Susanna Nicholson.
- Charles Medaris (6) b. abt 1781-2, married Barbara Grider.

- Gabriel Loving Medaris (6) b. 1805, married Rebecca Davis.
Rice died on 22 July 1824 in Burke County, NC. Rachael applied for Rice's Pension in 1836.
Rice's descendants use the spellings (in alph. order) Madaris, Medaris, Medearis, McDaris and McDearis. The continued use of the spelling McDaris did not occur until the 1830's and was first used by Rice's son Oliver (6). This apparently occurred in relation to a land dispute and possibly the social pressures of the North Carolina mountains to be Scottish. It is likely that the children of Rice picked up the speech pattern of Rachel and developed the phonetic "Mick" or "Mack" in their speech. The first appearance of the McDaris spelling shows on Rice's Pension application. This document was dictated by the acting Justice of Buncombe County, North Carolina on the stories that Rachel told. Rachel was 93 years old at the time. Because she was elderly she could not travel to the courthouse, therefore, the acting Justice traveled to her to create the documents. It seems certain that Rachel's Scottish accent created the phonetics documented on these papers. All other documents regarding Rice's service records, census records and etc., that would have been based on Rice's speech, use the spelling Medaris.

Sarah "Sally" Medaris (6) (Rice 5) b. abt 1789 in NC., d.1869 in Russell, Kent. Sarah married James Grider born 05 Sept. 1783 in Burke, Co. NC. James was the brother to Barbara Grider who married Sarah's brother Charles.
(James' grandmother, Sarah Morgan, was a first cousin of Daniel Boone's . Sarah Morgan's father was John Morgan had a sister, also named Sarah Morgan , who was Daniel's mother.)
Sarah and James had the following children:
- Hamilton Grider (7) b. 1805 in Ky. married Sally Bailey on 6/22/1825 d. in Vermillion Ill. They died before 1854 as proved by an Adair Co. KY court order dated 5 June 1854 in which Elzy Bailey was appointed guardian of [seven children] infant heirs of Hamilton Grider, deceased.
- Wesley Grider (7) b. 1809, married Lucy Holt on 10/11/1828

- Wilkerson Grider (7) b. 1 Jan 1815, d. 1868, married 1) Sally Holt, 2) Sarah Stapp, 18 May 1844 in Russell Co. KY
- William Grider (7) married Isabell Bailey in Russell Ky. on 7/28/1836. There is question of William's middle name as Preston.
- John F. Grider (7) b. 1823, in Russell Ky. d. 2 May 1852, married ???? Pescoe. There is discussion among the Grider descendants as to whether John is truly a son of James and Sarah.
- * One researcher states: John F. Grider is not the son of James and Sarah. I have in my possession copies of papers from Henderson Co. TN stating that Silas Grider was appointed guardian of Sarah F. Grider, dau. of John F. Grider of Henderson Co. KY. Kentucky Vital Statistics show that John F. Grider died in 1852 of measles. In his household in 1850 Henderson C. KY census are Pekoe children.
- Another points out: (That researcher) is basing her claim on the fact that guardian bonds at the Henderson county court house show Silas as guardian to Sarah Ann Grider, minor child of John F. Grider. However, the bonds do not state that John F. was a son of Silas. I would guess that John giving guardianship of his daughter to Silas could indicate that he was John's father, but it is not definite proof. I'm not saying (the other) is wrong; I just think more proof is needed. However, knowing (this researchers) background, I know she is very good at this stuff, and I wouldn't necessarily want to bet against her theory.
- I guess each individual will have to decide for his or her self. As my main concern is this site, I will leave the Grider debate up to the Grider descendants. Hopefully we will be updated if this issue is resolved.
- Rachael Grider (7) b. 01 April 1824 in Adair County, Kentucky, d. 30 Dec 1914 in Glensfork, Adair County, Kentucky at the age of 90 yrs, 8 mths and 29 days. She married Michael Green McKinley on 2/25/1845. She is buried in Blair cemetery near Glensfork.
- Anna Grider (7) b. 12 Sept. 1827 in Russell County, Kentucky; d. 13 May 1911 in Russell County, Kentucky. She married John Pearce (Pierce) a farmer who was b. 7 Mar 1826 in Adair County, Kentucky; d. 28 Feb 1911 in Russell County, Kentucky. They married 24 Jan 1853 in Russell County, Kentucky. John was believed to be the son of James and Nancy Blankenship Pearce (Pierce).
- Lucinda Grider (7) b. 1828, d. 1864, married Charles McKinley.
John Washington Medaris (6) (Rice 5) b. abt 1792 in Burke County, North Carolina, d. 1870 in Wright Co., Missouri. John was married to Jane Green who died in Indiana. In the 1870 Missouri census, Lucy A. Shelton Key is living in the household of John and is listed as his wife. According to records, Lucy married a John W. McDaris in Wright Co., Missouri on 29 Jan 1865. The children listed in this record are not John's, but are listed as McDaris.
Goodspeeds history states that the John W. that Lucy married was a soldier in the Union Army. There are several problems with this marriage. For one, John could not have possibly been a soldier because he would have been in his late 60's during the war. The age difference at the time of Lucy's marriage calls some question, although it is not impossible. She was 47, John 68. It is most possible that the statement in Goodspeeds history is incorrect about John being a soldier. But it is also possible that Lucy was not the wife of John, but the wife of a relative who is now dead and Lucy now lives with John. We have a John W. Medearis listed in the 2nd Volunteer Missouri Cavalry, USA, who died 01 Mar. 1865. This could very likely be Lucy's true husband. So we have a bit of a mystery as to who Lucy truly married and if John W. of this sketch was really her husband. We do not know who the John W. of the Missouri Calvary is.
We also have a marriage listing for J. W. Medaris to Mary Ann Shanks on
02 July 1848 in
Lucy's life was certainly interesting. Lucy A. Shelton had married John M. Key and resided in Wright County, Missouri. John was a member of the Union Army and was shot and killed on 09 Mar 1862 in Wright Co., MO, while taking corn from the field of Phillip Key . It is unclear if Phillip was a relative of John's but everything indicates that they were. Phillip a soldier for the Confederate Army was later killed by Federal's.
John and Jane had the following children:
- William Harvey McDaris (7) b. 1822, married Isabell Pyatt.
- Rice Puett McDaris (7) b. 1826, married Margaret Jane Carson.
- Robert Notion Medaris (7) b. 12 Apr. 1824 in Bradley County, Tennessee; d. 9 Sept. 1909, married Mary A. Simpson.
- Rufus S. Medaris (7) b. 1830, died 1856. He married Manervy J. Prater.
- James Medaris (7) married Eliz ????.
- John Washington McDaris Jr. (7) b. 1832, 1) to Eliza C. ????, 2) Sarah C. ????.
- Caroline D. Medaris (7) b. 1835
- Doctor Boyd McDaris (Doc) (7) b. 1837, married Sarah L. ????.

(credits 17, 18, 38, 39, 55, 68)
Oliver Medaris (6) (Rice 5) was born in 1796 most likely in Burke County, North Carolina. Oliver was married twice. He married 1) Malinda Sarah "Sally" Buckner on 10 Sept. 1815 in Burke County, NC. Witnesses to their marriage was John Hayes, well known friend of Daniel Boone's and Daniel Moore. Sarah Buckner had a sister Pattie , who married Oliver's brother James . Sarah "Sally" died in Buncombe County, NC on 12 July 1848. There is an obituary for "Malinda Sarah Buckner Medaris" in the Flat Creek Baptist Church minutes from 1848.
"FLAT CREEK CHURCH called upon to announce the death of our dear Sister Sallie McDaris which took place 12th July 1848 at her husbands own dwelling. She livd a member in said church 12 or 15 years beloved by many. An excellent neighbour an affectionate wife and tender mother aged 49 years She changed her earthly house of clay for a spiritual building eternal in the heavens and left many friends. Professed to see her way clear to go home to her everlasting rest. She left a kind husband and brothers and sisters and weeping children to mourn the loss of her sweet and agreeable company but we doubt not but her happiness is complete in her heavenly home above. Farewell we hope to meeet her again Flat Creek Church 2nd Septr 1848"
After Sarah's death Oliver married 2) Rebecca Loving. All of Oliver's children were born to Sarah. Oliver and Rebecca had no children together. However, a mystery surrounds several children who show in the census records with Oliver and Rebecca who appear to use the Medaris name. They appear to be children of Rebecca's. The question is, was Rebecca married to another Medaris before Oliver, or did she change her childrens names to Medaris?
There is a court dispute after Oliver's death regarding the disbursement of his belongings with these children. In the Old Buncombe County Heritage Book, page 150, entry #231, in records provided by the Bell Family Descendants, it states: (3) John Bell (1813-1863) married Elizabeth McDarris , born 1815, daughter of Oliver and Rebecca (Loving) McDarris. However Elizabeth was no doubt the daughter of Oliver and Sally Buckner.
There is also question as to the last name of Rebecca. Many researchers have listed it as Loving, but further research will be needed to determine if Rebecca's last name was or was not Loving. This type of conflicting information is what makes genealogy so challenging. If you have any good sound evidence please share it with us to make this information as accurate as possible.
Oliver died in Buncombe County in 1878, and is buried, along with Sarah and Rebecca, in Old Flat Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

HISTORY OF RUSH COUNTY, INDIANA: From the earliest time to the present, with biographical sketches, notes, etc. Illustrated; Chicago: Brant & Fuller, 1888, p 357. Bracken County.
JOHN W. FERREE, a native of Clermont County, Ohio, was born August 12th, 1821, son of Moses and Keziah (Medaris) Ferree, and is of French extraction. The father of this gentleman was born in Bracken County, Ky., in 1795, and died in Rush County, Ind., in 1863. The mother of Mr. Ferree was born in North Carolina in 1801, and died in this county in 1885. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and were known as zealous Christian people. The family here written of emigrated to Indiana from Ohio in 1836, and settled in Rush County, where the subject of this sketch has since resided. Our subject was reared on the farm and received such education as the pioneer schools of the county afforded. In 1852, he located on the farm where he now resides, and has continued his agricultural vocation with much success. The marriage of Mr. Ferree occurred September 21st, 1844, to Miss Sallie Winship, who was born in Rush County, Ind., in 1824, a daughter of Jesse Winship, Sr., one of the pioneers of this county. They have three children, viz.: Elizabeth, William F., and John Locke. Mr. Ferree is a Republican of the true type, and in 1876, was elected to fill the office of County Commissioner for the Third District which position he filled with much credit to himself. He had two brothers in the late war; one was killed at Resaca, and the other was seriously wounded at Columbus, Tenn. Mrs. Ferree is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the family is extensively known and highly respected.

Obituary
Mr. Mose Medaris was born July 13, 1814 and died January 20, 1900.
He was married February 15, 1845, to Martha Murrell, and to them were born six children, three boys and three girls, all of whom are still living and the widow to mourn the loss of their father and husband.
Mr. Medaris had lived in the Glensfork creek country [in eastern Adair County] for several years, and was a good neighbor, a kind husband and a loving father; and all can join me in saying that the neighborhood has lost a good citizen and the family their best friend.
Just a little while before he died, he professed faith in Christ, and seemed to be happy until death; though he was conscious of everything and showed all signs of being very happy even in the last moments.
And now to the widow, children and friends, let us all so live that we can meet him in the Canaan land where parting will be no more.
The writer conducted a short funeral service at the home of the deceased, afterwhich he was laid to rest in the Garnett grave-yard to await the resurrection.

Obituary
Mrs. Martha Medaris was born in Adair county, Kentucky, July 29, 1817, and died at her home, near Glenville, March 13, 1900. She was the daughter of John and Mary Murrell, who have long since passed from earth to heaven. She was a sister of Rev. S.L. Murrell, of the Louisville Conference, who was for four years Presiding Elder of the Columbia District. She was the last of her father's family, save one, Jesse Q. Murrell, once a merchant of this town, now living in Fort Worth, Texas. He is now nearly ninety years old and is in good health.
She was married to Moses Medaris February 15, 1845, who departed this life about two months hence in hope of a blessed immortality, and she has quickly gone to join him on the other bright shore to part no more. She was converted when quite young and joined the Methodist church, and for nearly seventy years walked in the light of God's truth, and let her light shine before those around her, and especially around her home. She was never very vigorous, but had a good measure of energy, and was busy all through life. She was very even tempered, rarely if ever, showing any lack of patience.
She was a good neighbor, and was greatly beloved by those with whom she mixed and mingled. She never recovered from the shock her husband's death gave her.
May the God of all consolation comfort the hearts of all the children and grandchildren and help them to be ready to meet Him when death shall come
/s/ Jesse L. Murrell.
Elijah Medaris (7) ( Charles 6 , Rice 5) b. 1810, married Mary S. Hurt. There was question of Mary's maiden name being "Hart". It is likely that Mary's maiden name is actually Hurt as it is a common name in the area, where Hart does not appear in the census. Also a "Hurt" child was living with Elijah and Mary in the 1850 Adair Co. KY census.

Death of an Old Citizen
Rice Medaris was born March 22, 1817, near Columbia [Adair County], Ky., and died at his home on East Grant Street in this city at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 1908, aged 91 years, 8 months, and 6 days. When a young man he moved to Pike county, Illinois, and was married to Mary Cole March 13, 1846. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls. One son died in infancy and another son, Samuel Medaris, died July 22, 1905. The deceased is survived by his wife and the following name children: Mrs. N. I. Lux, who lives near Monticello; Joseph Medaris, of Belmont, Ill.; W.A. Medaris, our townsman; Mrs. Mellie Suffern of Peoria, Ill.; and Sadie and Nannie, who reside with their mother. Mr. Medaris moved to Platt county in 1866, and to Monticello in 1880. He cast his first vote for president in 1840 and never missed a presidential election in his life. He identified himself with the democratic party but was broad minded and liberal in his views and endeavored to inculate the same generous and charitable principles in his children. He united with the M.E. church in Pike county, Illinois, while he lived in that county and remained a consistent member of the church the remainder of his life. A short time prior to his death he expressed himself as entirely satisfied with the faith he had professed and declared himself ready and willing for The Better World. He was a man who enjoyed good health and was always at work or doing something useful for some one until extreme old age came upon him. He was a pleasant and agreeable conversationalist, and enjoyed the society and companionship of his family and friends. He has left a host of friends to sympathize with his love ones, who can say in the language of the Apostle Paul, He has fought a good fight; he has kept the Faith, and has just earned an inheritance promised the children of God.

Colbert Medaris (7) (Charles 6, Rice 5) married Amelia "Millie" E. Bradshaw on 15 Nov. 1848. Colbert apparently died around 1849 / 1850. Amelia appears in the 1850 Adair, Co., census with her parents Isaiah and Sarah Bradshaw but without her son. This indicates that Amelia was pregnant with Colberts son at the time of his death.
I believe Colbert was named after his mothers uncle, Colbert Blair. They had the following known child:
- Charles I. Medaris (8) b. 1850 in Adair Co., Kent. He married 1) Mary Perryman, 2) Laura Pierce, 09 May 1909.
Millie remarried to John R. Wheat in 1854.

William
Harvey Medaris /
McDaris (7) (John 6 , Rice 5
)
b. 1822. He
married Isabell Pyatt
on 18 May 1843. She was b.28 Jun 1820. Some researchers say
Isabell's maiden name was Loving. Hopefully someone will solve
this for us.
The family of William Harvey went west in a covered wagon. They traveled to Jackson Co, Indiana at the beginning of the Civil war. They crossed over the Mississippi which was frozen over. Ruts cut so deep in the ice, they were nearly to the hubs of the wagon. Robert Lafayette was a baby and his mother hid him under the bed of the wagon fearing they would be attacked by Indians. The trip took a little over three months. They settled in Wright Co. Missouri.
The travel eastward seemed to parallell the the Cherokee's eastward movement. This sometimes occurred because of the land opportunities that arose as the Indians had to give up their land. It appears that the family left NC after 1854 and traveled through Tennessee in 1856 and arrived in Missouri before Nancy's birth in 1859.
William and Isabell had the following children:
- Elizabeth Ann McDaris (8) b. 13 Mar. 1844 in North Carolina, d. 1881 in Lawrence, County, Indiana. She married Wesley Vaughn abt. 1865 in Jackson County, Indiana. William
Taylor Medearis
(7) (
James Andrew 6 , Rice 5 )
b. 27 Dec
1826 in
Buncombe
County,
NC, d. 11 Mar 1904. Charles married Sarah Rachel Reid
who
was b. 01 Aug. 1836 in Bradley County, Tenn., d. 09 Aug. 1921 in
Hemp, Fannin County, Georgia. She died of "Dropsy and old
age" according to her death certificate. She was the
daughter of John and Nancy
Logan Reid.
William and Sarah were married 17 Nov. 1853 in Union County,
Georgia.
William served in Company B, 16th Tennessee Infanty, "Ruckers" Legion. He enlisted 18 April 1861. He was listed as a "Scout" under General Vaughn. William was captured at Cleveland, Tennessee, April 1863 and served time as a POW at Columbus, Indiana. He was released at the end of the war. A note on the pension application states that William deserted on 05 April 1865. This is likely due to the requirement of Confederate prisoners to sign an "oath of allegiance" to the United States in order to be released. This was seen as an act of desertion on the part of the South and many pensions were denied because of it. Signing an oath for your release on the last day of the war can in no way signify desertion on a part of William. He could have signe the oath at the time of his capture and been released much sooner.
William's middle name has always been known to his family as Taylor. However, in the 1880 Ga. census records he shows as Thomas W. It is possible that his name was William Thomas Taylor Medearis. William and Rachel are buried in Hemphill Baptist Church Cemetery, in Hemp, Georgia.
According to his headstone, William died in 1908, but according to Sarah's claim in a 1910 Confederate Pension appplication, he died in 1904.
