This page will be dedicated to providing ideas and
assistance in collecting and preserving genealogical information.
Our generation is in an ideal situation to perform genealogy. Our
grandparents were in a much better situation and those of that generation
who did preserve our histories have made an incredible contribution the
future generations.
Preserve
History Now
There are many things we can do now to preserve our
recent and current "future gifts" to our descendants. We must think
as genealogist and think about the things we wish our ancestors had left
for us. Genealogy is much more than preserving the past, we must
realize that we are also creating a past. We will someday be the
people in our books. Here are a few things that I came up with that
I hope you will find intrigueing.

Collect stories from current generations. Write
down a short biography of your parents, grandparents and yourself.

Sit with your parent or relative who spent time in
the military and collect stories from their experiences. Just think
how excited you would be to read a collection of stories from an ancestor
in the Revolution or the Civil War. Our future generations will feel
that way about the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.

Next time you get your hair cut (for those who still
have some) collect a sample. Collect those of your family and other
family members. This allows future generations to touch us.
Again think of how you would feel to have a lock of your great great grandmothers
hair.

Have a good portrait made of you and your spouse
or both of you and your children. Do not pass up the opportunity
to get a full family portrait made.

Keep a Diary.

If you can afford to, ensure unmarked graves of your
family members are marked. Try to get contributions from other family
members. Adequate headstones are available for under $150. If you
have a family member who fought in a war, including the Civil War, you
can get a free headstone from the Federal Government to place on an unmarked

Recipies are connections to the past. Create a family
cook book made of recipies from family members. Preserve Grandma's recipies
now, before they are lost. Recipies tell you a lot about a person.
