Upper Chattahoochee River - Smith Island

Not far above Ga Hwy 115 the Smith Island area of the Chattahoochee River would pose an interesting set of challenges for a hovercrafter. This area has not yet been traversed by anyone known to this writer and the ability to do so may well be dependent upon adequate water flow. While access points are quite limited in this area no known restrictions exist short of the Hwy 75 area near Helen, GA.

Shown here is the southern pass around Smith Island at a river flow of approx. 180 GPS (by Helen USGS station).

Over the course of a 1000' run the river is said to loose 18' of elevation, a significant ranking.

The southern route contains some challenging sections, but is wide enough to contain several alternate routes.

The path around the north side of Smith Island appears a bit milder, however, it has not been assessed firsthand.

Above the relatively short section of rapids at Smith Island the river flattens out to a 2 to 3 mile section of flat water.
