Upstream of Sprewell Bluff State Park, the Flint River offers a good mix of tight rocky sections and flat open water. Sprewell Bluff Park is just west of Thomaston, Ga, or approx. 80 miles south of downtown Atlanta. As the road approaches the park it takes a steep decent down to river from the East and a sheer vertical wall some 400' in height appears on the west bank. Parking and a ramp exist at the river's edge and this is quite a scenic point of entry. Be advised that there is a swimming area in the immediate area of the launch ramp. Pedistrans and swimmers (particulary children) can pose a significant challenge when using this ramp.
Heading upstream from the park, the river is quite rocky and a natural rock dam is encountered after about one mile. Based upon the width (about 100') and the consistant top surface, it is difficult to see how this is not a man-made structure. It is possible to hover over this dam, but one should first to scout the options and choose their path with care.
Continuing upstream for another 8 or 9 miles the river offers a variety of conditions and then becomes predominatly deep and flat. At the highway 74 bridge a ramp exists with a small gravel parking area. Other than a convience store about 1/2 mile to the west, this area is highly desolate. If you plan to consider hovering to the store, be advised that this is a dirt road.
Now back down the Flint to Sprewell Bluff, the river downstream of the park is similar to that above. This would be a good place to explore, but is yet to be charted by hovercraft. For the run from Sprewell Bluff to Hwy 74, it is advisable to allow 3 hours based on a slow to moderate pace.
