When someone once asked me what I wanted to do with my Newfie Sailor, I remember answering that I wanted to do it all. But never did I dream that all would include a UDX.
Sailor entered our home and hearts as a 7-week-old puppy in the summer of 1989. He was busy and curious, and our initial training was more about manners than serious obedience. He was an instinctive carrier, always wanting to "help," which fit in well with one of my early training goals-hold and carry. He carried a newspaper, which was as long as he was, and before long, he would carry anything I gave him.
When his formal training got underway, we worked on all levels, and he expressed his creativity by finding new ways of doing-or not doing-things. He was a maturing male, which brought its own problems and distractions, including his interest in other dogs. I had told his breeder, Judi Adler, that I wanted a dog with lots of drive and spunk. Whenever we had difficult times, she reminded me that I had gotten what I ordered.
