I read a very disturbing article today. It seems that some maverick
anthropologist is under attack for asserting that habitual cannibalism
does not now, and never did exist.
Among other things, he explains that reports of cannibalism are made
by other competitve or hostile tribes, but that NONE of the groups
labelled as cannibals present THEMSELVES as cannibals, e.g. the
Chinese claimed that the Koreans were cannibals and vice versa. This
leads ANY reasonable reader to wonder if there had been a series of
translation problems wherein the word for "assholes" is nearly the
same as the word for "flesh eaters." Just a thought.
The idea that there is no HARD EVIDENCE of habitual people eaters
miffed some somebody else whose life's work has been proving from bone
fragments that the Anasazi (sp?) were munching each other like there
was no need for population growth tomorrow. Hmmm.
The rebel also pointed out that no anthropologist had ever witnessed
any human flesh feast first hand. This was news to ME.
I find all this tremendously depressing to think about. I mean, it
reminds me of the time my mom was about to have a hysterectomy.
Because I didn't trust the doctor, I objected and pointed out that I
didn't think it was a good idea to yank her uterus just because it was
UNATTRACTIVE in a lumpy sort of way. Besides, I told her, it would
really bother me if she had it removed, not because I NEEDED it any
more, but it was comforting to know that it was ALIVE even if it has
long ceased to be FUNCTIONAL for ME.
Just so with the cannibals: I just liked to think that they were out
there SOMEWHERE even if they'd never get a chance to serve me.
