I can't help it. I'm a SubGenius to the bone. Even in the midst of my
turmoil, I have found the Slack. When someone tries to take away the
things that matter to you, you discover just HOW MUCH they matter.
Every day that you have the things you love, is filled with Slack.
The smell of my husband's neck is intoxicating these days, the way he
feels when I hug him tightly. Every time I touch him, I am reminded of
the night when I COULDN'T touch him. When the law would not allow it.
My bed, which used to piss me off (needs a new mattress), feels like a
cloud compared to that jailhouse pad. My coffee, which I never had a
problem appreciating before, has now become Ambrosia. Drinking out of
a ceramic mug is a GOOD thing now, not just an expected thing.
I've started smoking cigarettes again, but I've promised myself I'll
quit as soon as this is settled in my favor. Every cigarette is tasty
once more.
Yesterday when I stepped outside with the dogs, I looked at the sky
and thought, "How incredibly beautiful this world is!" This is a
magnificent planet and I adore it. I love the feel of wind on my skin,
even cold wind. In jail, you can't see the sky, you can't feel the
wind, you can only feel the cold.
Every day when my son comes home from school, I take such joy in
seeing his beautiful face, in just spending a little while talking
together and knowing that it IS important, that we don't have much
more time together even if there were no legal matters pending. This
situation has reminded me of the shortness of life, and the fragility
of our daily existence. I've found out who my true and good friends
are. It has given me Slack in the middle of Hell. I have found the
diamond in the goat's ass...and I guess I always will.
