Mother gave her that square
in the corner of the yard.
Water and warm words
and a smile bright as that
corner of the yard
when things grow
proud and straight on
patiently staked vines.
Except the tomatoes
wandering their own way
as tomatoes will.
She restakes, reties, tries
to keep the lines
perfect but tomatoes
just want to grow large
in that corner of the yard
under her sunlight.
She surveys the rows, rainbow,
red out of place and
grabs the shears.
Next year
will be tulips.
