THE STORY OF HELEN
Ready
to go to the mountains, but just don't have the time? The money? Weather too
bad? Fear not, dear surfer -- you can at least tour the Alpine Village
of Helen, Georgia from right where you sit! And even better, you can
see things here which are far beyond the view of the casual Alpine tourist.
That is, unless they buy one of the books upon which this site is based. But,
that's another story -- back to the tours. We currently have two main tours
departing, each of which offers a side tour or two of its own.
| TOUR #1:
After wandering among Helen's bavarian buildings and perhaps enjoying
the revelry of Oktoberfest, many visitors naturally ask how Helen
became "Georgia's Alpine Village".There's a tale behind the
architecture, of course, and those most curious about things Alpine
and the story of the mostly modern city of Helen should push the Tour # 1 button to the right. |

| TOUR #2:
More -- Ahhmmm! -- hardy virtual travelers who may wish
to delve further into the past are accommodated on Tour # 2. Modern visitors may be surprised to learn that
Helen's Main Street follows the route of an ancient Indian trading
path, or that the Helen valley holds an all-but-forgotten cemetery
which is the final resting place of many pioneers who came there in
the wild days of the Georgia frontier. The Helen valley was also the
scene of much activity the Georgia Gold Rush of 1829; a side tour
follows the route of a great mining ditch which was in use from the
Civil War until World War II. For this tour, click the picture to
