Status: Weekly IRC chat, now on unircnet network, channel #Scott_Bakula2 , Saturdays 2PM Eastern time (GMT - 5)
New link for Saturday Scott
IRC chats:
irc://irc.unirc.net
Update Dec 13, 2002
We've
been having a lot of trouble with DalNet lately, so we are trying out a new IRC
network.
The Saturday Chat has been relocated since a few weeks ago when Dalnet threw us all out and
wouldn't let us back in. We will continue to attempt to use UNIRCNET
as it actually worked much better. If we have problems
with that, we'll try something else in the future. The goal here is to get on,
stay on, and not have those ten minute (!) lags
1. The room
(channel) name remains the same: #Scott_Bakula2
For more details on the Saturday chats, check below.
2. Only the network has changed
3. As always, you
must have MIRC (or another IRC program) installed on your computer, but clicking
the link above, will start MIRC *for you* and connect you to the proper network.
4. When you get a dialog box asking you whether to
Change to a New Server
or
Open a New Connection
the second choice worked for me...
5. If you are on AOL: Please log on to the internet using AOL, then use the Internet Explorer on your desktop. The link above does not seem to work with AOL's browser. Alternatively, you can use Netscape, if you have it.
For those of you who know how to set up new IRC connections by hand, the server name is irc.unirc.net and the port number is 6667
For more help, you can post on the message board or IM me
The following directions are for Windows users... Mac users should try something
else... Linux users can probably figure it out all by themselves ;-)
For Windows Users 1. Go to www.mirc.com and download it FREE. Select a download site near you
or one that will be less busy. When you get a screen that says you can buy it or
try it for money, 'x' out that screen and continue. You DO NOT have to pay
anything, ever. 1a. Install program 2. If you aren't using the link
to get to the chat, follow this instructions. When you get the Connect box : click ADDHow to get there
If you don't have mIRC,
Note from Pam: Actually MIRC is Shareware. The author
would really like you to pay him for it, but so far, he's still trusting that
you will. He hasn't yet created any "this software will stop working in 30
days" reminders...
If you are using the link, skip to number 3
Description: unircnet (or whatever--this is just to help you find it in the
list: you can name it "1" if you want)
IRC Server: irc.unirc.net
Port: 6667
Group: unircnet or 1 or ScottChat or whatever (the goal here, again, is to find
it in the servers list)
Click Add and then OK (or Connect to IRC Server if you want to connect right
now)
3. register and all that
4. type in channel #Scott_Bakula2
5. click "join" and you're there.
Note from me:
When you are setting up or signing up, there will be a place where it asks for
nickname. You may wish to sign in with a distinctive name that has likely not
been used by other DALnet users. It seems that on DALnet you can register a
name, so if your name is, for example, "Lin" (hi Lin!) and you sign on
as "Lin", the server will change your name to Guest345439 or something
similar (after which, we will explain how to change yourself back into something
recognizable). If your imagination fails you, try your first name with 0808 after it.
Most of us still remember Sam Beckett's birthday... (1009 is not as noticeable,
at least to me). Unircnet seems to be less populated and therefore, you may have
fewer problems with the server changing your nickname on you.
This is not as difficult as its going to look at first glance.
1. At the top of the mIRC window, click on File, Options, Sounds, and make sure that "Enable sounds" is checked and it says "DCC" send under "On event, play sound"
2. Then click on the "+" next to Sounds in the left hand column so that you see the sub-folder "Requests"
3. Highlight "Requests"
4. On this window make sure that the following are checked:
"Accept sound requests"
"Ignore if a sound is currently playing" (good catch, Janey <g>)
"Warn if sound doesn't exist"
"Send '!nick' file as a private message
5. Under Sound folders it should say "Wave (*.wav)
6. Under that it should say "C:\PROGRAM FOLDERS\MIRC\sounds\"
Now your settings are right so you can receive, send, and play wav (sound) files.
Back on the mIRC Window, click on DCC in the top task bar and click Send. You
will see your C:\PROGRAM FOLDERS\MIRC\sounds\ file. This is where you will store
any wav files you download from the Internet. If someone sends you a wav file on
mIRC, it will automatically go here.
Once you have wav files here, you can play them in mIRC for yourself and anyone
who also has them by typing /sound followed by one space then the name of the
file you want to play followed by .wav. Then hit Enter on your keyboard.
EX: /sound howl.wav
For users of mIRC
1. Click on DCC on the top of the mIRC window 2. click send 3. type the nick of the person to whom you want to send exactly like they are
signed in 4. Select the sound file you want to send from the list 5. click send and then wait for them to accept.Surviving Chat Lingo
