Just me rambling. Mostly on topic

There's a report from Trek Today on the SBFF about Rick Berman's "course correction" on Enterprise. Okay I just made that up on the spot. I'm not sure it really is one.
And, gee, there's no better place to ramble than on your own site... (so of course I chose somewhere else to post this--but I copied it here)

Thanks Gail! That wasn't up yet when I came home and threw myself into bed...

about this part

Readers can also have their say on "how to fix the Star Trek franchise" from next week at TV Guide's Trek Section

that's tvguide.com, btw.

I had my hopes raised... I was hoping that B&B were actually *requesting* our suggestions. Looks to me it's just tvguide.com requesting them. Still..

Why is that just when I finally think the series is headed somewhere (other than the toilet, that is) --*then* the producers tell us "while Berman said the show has undergone a minor change in direction. 'Let's just say there will be a slight revision in our mission, and a slight revision in the part of space that Enterprise is heading into.'"

..Okay...

This could be good news. Or not.

Of course I've never heard Rick Berman say he was "bummed" before.. Then again David E. Kelley apologized for *nine* episodes of Ally last year. You wouldn't believe the things he is saying about ABC this year -- in public.

Like Joanne saying she'd never thought she'd advocate focusing on the Temporal Cold War, I have started to feel just recently (Cease Fire) that we *are* heading somewhere, finally. There is the problem with story arcs, that if you spend your whole seasons on them, newcomers are clueless and can't get into the series. But neither am I generally fond of series that are... random. I like things with history. Speaking of which, sometime this week or last I found myself saying "Making history with every light year" and and thinking *now* is the time to say that. When you start actually making history. Not when it's just a cute turn of phrase.

I don't know.. Quilts *are* made of patchwork. Maybe they can create something beautiful yet. I dare them to compete with Pat

And I would be interested to hear what any of you would say, given the opportunity to suggest improvements to the series (the plots, the dialog, the locations -- not Scott's.. um.. hair )

I thought that Star Trek had always been... random. And then I have a friend who missed a large chunk of DS9 and got totally lost. (what Dominion war? what's the Dominion?) But we can't be totally random here. We have an end point we have to reach (the Federation).

I found it interesting last night that they caught on to the time looping so quickly -- that doesn't usually happen (I think)

Further off topic, I have to vent:

Mr & Mrs Smith was supposed to be about two characters we didn't know anything about (that's almost a direct quote). For that, wouldn't the fun be in following the clues and finding the pieces of the puzzle, week by week? Another series that started that same year--the Pretender (which Tommy Thompson had a big hand in) had me hooked on the mysteries of two of the main characters in the first two episodes. TWO episodes. M&MS made me wait till ep 4 to remind me there was a mystery. If you have one--*capitalize on it* for Pete's sake.
But tP was a mystery. I was never quite sure what M&MS was.

Trek is supposed to be ... what? action, adventure, science fiction, ships shooting at each other? weird anomalies? people dealing with outer space for the first time (okay further out space)?

I certainly wouldn't know how to write it. (except if Archer doesn't start showing a little vulnerability, I'm going to shoot someone. Okay, he mopes well, but when it comes to the V word, he doesn't even measure up to Peter Hunt). I don't even feel close enough to him to call him anything but Archer. Is it possible to be everyone's best buddy and still hold the entire world at arm's length? If so, he's doing a *great* job.

btw if it's sweeps that Rick is bummed about -- a little PUBLICITY might not have hurt. There were at least two, and possibly three very good eps this month. I'm betting almost no one saw them.

Okay, last night when ENT was over, I said "Huh?" (it was probably the lack of resolution -- tho Archer is making great progress in standing firm and such.) but then again, I said the same thing after Buffy this week, so...

and... Borg? Crap. I didn't even read the posting. Fear of spoilers..

Done now.

Maybe I'll go back and read more slowly.

Update -- February 7, 2004

While still no fun in the Vulnerability department  -- excluding Twilight <big smiles here> -- Enterprise's course correction has not been the disaster I expected. The writing seems to be appealing to more fans, casual fans, critical TV viewers (read: my brother) and I, having been infected by their previous criticisms, am quite happy that at least some of them are now much happier (cause that means I might get to keep Scott on TV for another season, maybe). And I'm even getting excited about what is to come with the Xindi arc! But then, I really like arcs)
