--Many things that don't deserve a bad rap seem to get one
anyway. Long Island ax-cents. Nostalgia. Having a good cry. Being a 13-year-old
girl. Films made for the entire family.
That all of these can be immensely satisfying is proven in Showtime's sublime
Sunday drama, "What Girls Learn," which also gives a good name to
letting actors produce their own movies. Scott Bakula... does the honors
here, and you want to write the guy a blank
check for his next effort.

Two sisters growing up near Atlanta, Georgia in 1981 are uprooted when their mother (Elizabeth Perkins) falls in love with a New Yorker (Scott Bakula). Elizabeth (Tamara Hope) accepts their new living situation happily, but Tilden (Alison Pill) has a harder adjusting to their new stepfather-until a life-threatening illness throws their domestic situation into disarray. Lee Rose (A Girl Thing) directed this domestic drama based on a novel by Karin Cook.

According to Variety,
Elizabeth Perkins has been cast opposite Bakula in the female lead role. She will
likely be playing Frances, the on-screen mother of two young sisters, who will be played by Alison Pill and Tamara Hope.
'What Girls Learn' is based on the novel
of the same name by Karin Cook. The book was told from the perspective of12-year old Tilden (presumably played by Pill), whose life is uprooted when
her mother falls in love with a stranger, Nick (Bakula), and moves the family
from Atlanta to Long Island to be with him. Fortunately, Nick turns out to be a
kind man, and Tilden and her sister Elizabeth enjoy some stability. But then
their mother discovers a lump in her breast, and while she is hospitalized, their predatory
brother arrives, and the sisters are thrown back upon their own strong bond with each other.
The telepic was shot in Toronto this April, and was directed by Lee Rose.
The film was produced by Bakula via his company BPi (Bakula Productions Inc.). It is not yet known when Showtime will air 'What
Girls Learn.'

"What Girls Learn" is a sensitive and emotional story exploring the trials and tribulations of two young sisters forced to juggle their beginning adolescence in a new town, a new school and with a new man in their mother's life. The ensuing changes in their mother's life are about to make adolescence that much more difficult.
Based on the book "What Girl Lean" by Karin Cook, it is directed by Lee Rose ("A Girl Thing").....and stars Elizabeth Perkins....Scott Bakula ("American Beauty," Paramount's "Enterprise," "A Girl Thing")... Alison Pill...Margo Martindale ("A Girl Thing"...) and Tamara Hope.... Thirteen-year-old Tilden (Pill) and 12-year-old Elizabeth (Hope) are finally making new friends in their new school and everything seems to be falling into place. That is, until their mother Frances (Perkins) meets and falls in love with Nick (Bakula), and the girls are forced to endure the growing pains of adolescence. The girls are dismayed at the thought of someone else taking away their mother's affection. Despite loud objections, the girls are uprooted to Nick's home on Long Island. Nick, a man of style without the pretense, knows he has his work cut out for him as he tried to gain the trust of the girls, but he is patient. Frances, the eternal optimist, has faith that everything will be just wonderful, and she truly believes her girls will grow to love Nick as much as she does.
However, the girls are soon to be confronted with a more terrifying prospect when their mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. As Frances wages a battle against her illness, Tilden and Elizabeth must fight through their anger and frustration to finally come to realize the true meaning of family, growin up and the magic their mother has instilled in them....
