MindSpring to Offer High-Speed ADSL Internet Access in BellSouth Territory Initial service to be launched in Atlanta; other cities to follow

ATLANTA (May 6, 1999) - MindSpring customers in Atlanta will soon enjoy the benefits of an always-on, high-speed connection to the Internet as the National Internet Service Provider today announced its initial roll-out of the new MindSpring ADSL service in the Southeast.

MindSpring Enterprises, Inc. (Nasdaq:MSPG) and BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE:BLS) have entered an agreement allowing MindSpring to provide its award-winning Internet access over BellSouth's high-speed Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) network.

"This is an exciting first step toward enabling our customers to experience the broadband future of the Internet," said Mike McQuary, president of MindSpring Enterprises. "MindSpring is committed to offering our customers a high speed Internet access service that is affordable and is backed by our award-winning customer service and support."

The new service will provide MindSpring customers with an "always on" connection to the Internet and download speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second -- more than 50 times faster than a traditional 28.8 kilobit per second analog connection. MindSpring will begin limited technical trials of the new ADSL service, with an expected metropolitan Atlanta service launch early in the fall. The rollout schedule for MindSpring's ADSL service to other cities within BellSouth's territory also will be determined during the trial period.

"ADSL customers will be better equipped to experience the next generation of broadband web content, allowing faster downloads of audio, video, and interactive text," said Erika Jolly, vice president of consumer products, MindSpring Enterprises. "In addition, the "always on" connection allows users to make and receive phone calls or send faxes, while simultaneously accessing the Internet."

MindSpring's ADSL customers also will be able to access MindSpring's dialup network, an important benefit for customers who travel. A customer can access the MindSpring network by making a local phone call in more than 775 cities nationwide.
