MindSpring Announces Consumer aDSL Plans for California, Texas Over Covad Network
MindSpring aDSL Service Available Fall 1999

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999--Leading national Internet Service Provider, MindSpring Enterprises, Inc. (Nasdaq: MSPG) and Covad Communications (Nasdaq: COVD), a leading broadband provider, today announced plans to introduce a consumer Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (aDSL) service to select markets in California and Texas this fall. The new MindSpring aDSL service marks the company's first rollout of broadband Internet access on the West Coast.

"MindSpring's new aDSL service will give consumers in California and Texas a choice in how they receive high-speed access to the Internet," said Jim Anderson, MindSpring's group product manager for fast access. "MindSpring aDSL delivers the same high-quality Internet service our customers expect, using a broadband infrastructure that is one of the best in the industry. And, it is backed by our award-winning, 24-hour customer service and support."

MindSpring will offer its consumer aDSL service over Covad Communication's network, the largest DSL network in the U.S with service available to 13 million homes and businesses. The two companies previously announced an agreement whereby Covad is the preferred provider of sDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) service to MindSpring Biz, a division of MindSpring focused on providing Internet services to small- and medium-sized businesses.

"We are pleased to partner with MindSpring to offer aDSL services to their strong national base of customers," said Robert Roblin, executive vice president of marketing for Covad. "Together we are preparing MindSpring's customers to be Internet-ready for the streaming video and sound applications of today, as well as the future of the Internet where broadband applications will be used for everything from e-shopping to downloading the content of advanced portal sites."

Covad's DSL technology allows for high-speed Internet access using the copper phone wires found in nearly all residences today. Once installed, the high-speed connection is secure, "always on," and offers data transfer speeds of up to 50 times faster than a traditional 28.8 Kilobit per second (Kbps) modem. This advanced connection removes the need to dial-in each time a user wants to browse the Internet or download e-mail, and eliminates delays, busy signals and disconnects.

MindSpring currently offers a high-speed cable modem Internet service via the hybrid fiber coaxial network of Knology Holdings, Inc., in Montgomery, Ala. and Columbus, Ga., and plans to expand into three more Knology markets by the end of 1999. In addition, MindSpring has an agreement with BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) to provide consumer aDSL service this fall over BellSouth's network. The service will rollout initially in the Atlanta area and will be available throughout the Southeastern United States in 2000.
