Today; I was the first one awake;
.
Slipping out my door, I streached the last of the night from my arms. It was exactly like my best dreams. Every step was better and better. I set down back to back with my favorite tree. Awaking up I propped my head up on my hands and waited for every else to get to their breakfast.
The first bird sang until I rolled on my side to look at it. I didn't want to scare her.
" I know it's going to be a great day." I said to myself and out loud to this brand new day.
My newest friend in the tree sang extra loud. Flapping his wings as if it was very inportant. He seemed to be trying so very hard
"I too have something. important I am trying to do." I said to only him but louder.
He flew to the top of the tree and his cries didn't bother me as much.
Across the yard his neighbors answered him from their own levels. The whole area was full of early bird sounds. Each one reassuring to the other.
The bird I had spoken to fluttered to the ground to snap at the buzzing flies. The Sun had chased away the shadows, and the wind was drying the dew. Our little part of my world was now very busy.
I saw my friend was now at breakfast, eating the worms he pulled from the bare ground under my swing.
" I sure wasn't expecting you." Came from somewhere in the now warming air.
First jerking my head in the direction of the house. I looked around for someone that was out there before I was.
" No-one's ever seen the first one before, you know." Came unmistakably from the Robin as he hopped upon my swing.
A grasshopper whorled onto my knee, demanding my complete attention. My Robin used his time to fly again to the top of our tree.
As I had spoken first, I directed my complete attention to my pardner in the treetop.
" Where are you from?" I said, trying to catch his expressions through the branchs
As no-one had called me in as yet, We both waited expectantly.
" I got up very late today, very, very late No-one called me so I had to wake everybody up. It's the first time I ever did it. It felt fine I tell you, all that responsiblity, I did it fine." He sang very loudly.
" Indeed you did," I cheered with him.
Throwing back his head and he sang very proudly.
"Why is it so very important to be the first?" I asked my bird.
" You did say you were the first, didn't you?" I asked louder.
"You were actually the first,." He said. " But you didn't see your opportunity"
" First at what?" I yelled back way to loud
Hopping down, He bounced up very close.
" First one to help the Sun across the edge.. First to proclaim this brand new, beautiful day. To call out to friends to be alive again."
Bounding up onto our swing, He flew away.
Our congersation ended just as my Mother called my name again. I knew the story I could tell at breakfast and I now have.
