High SpotsFROM YELLOWSTONE & GLACIER

INTRODUCTION

Gridlock, they said. That's what we'd find in Yellowstone on the fourth of July weekend. Don't go then unless you have to.

Well, we had to.

Had to get away. Jobs were driving us crazy. We wanted to travel. Maybe we should've visited family in Illinois or California, but we wanted a vacation of our own. Nowhere we'd ever been before. We chose the Fourth of July weekend and the week following it to maximize the vacation time. And we chose Yellowstone because neither of us had ever been there. It would be a vacation all our own.

I started researching Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. It would cost a little more to fly there, but we would save money by camping part of the time. We enjoy the wilderness, but we also like to stay in nice inns. A mix of camping and inn stays -- that would be our perfect trip.

A Prarie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor's Midwestern flavored radio show, would be broadcasting from Yellowstone on July 5, and on the chance of getting into that audience, I shaped our itenerary to put us around Old Faithful on that Saturday.

Our trip came together quickly with a few Internet searches and a few phone calls. The credit card took quite a beating, but we've got some stories to tell and some pictures to share and some memories to enjoy forever.

As I continue to update these pages, I'll tell you about our short treks into the Rocky Mountain wilderness. And I'll cover a couple of other high spots, like meeting Garrison Keillor and staying in the coziest inn in the world -- the Izaak Walton Inn. Read on, skim through, write me with your comments.

I hope you enjoy. And I hope you can travel to these wonderful places.
