Kerry Comments on Direction of Pioneer Bowl
by Bryan Steven Follins
Friday, 18 Dec
Atlanta, GA(OTW)-
The idea of the Pioneer Bowl has stirred more than a mild bit of interest over the last two years. The concept of the game is good, but according to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Commissioner Leon Kerry, some things can be improved.

"We approved it (Pioneer Bowl) in '97 and we played it in '97," said Kerry. I did not want to do it in '97. I wanted to do it a year later. You need time to build sponsors. Atlanta should be a town where you are able to get sponsors, like BellSouth and Coca Cola."
Kerry says getting sponsors is about "putting butts in the seats." The announced attendance at the 1998 Pioneer Bowl was just over 5,000 fans. This was 2,000 less butts than there were at the 1997 game.

"Here in Atlanta, with SIAC schools surrounding it, there should be some butts in the seats at $10 a ticket," added Kerry, who stated that even though this year's game was not a test year, something has to be changed. "I'm not happy, not at all."
Kerry is not sure if moving the game to a CIAA-based city would be the solution.

"I don't know," he said. "I'm going to try something. I can't let it go like it is."
Kerry also stated that making trips to Atlanta was not helping his office's budget.

"The (plane)fare is $170, hotel $100 (a day)," he added. "You stay a couple of days, that's a $500 trip. That's money coming out of another budget that is not supposed to come out of that budget."
Kerry, who says he was in on the conceptualization of the Pioneer Bowl, supports the event.

"It's good," he says. It is a lot of history between the two schools (Tuskegee and Livingstone)." But, he is quick to get his mind back on business. "We need sponsors, we need butts in the seats. We can do something where we could give gifts to children in the seats. We could do a lot of different things. I need to do some things that I haven't done."

On Saturday evening after the game, Kerry met with SIAC Commissioner Wallace Jackson. According to Kerry, at that meeting, it was announced the Pioneer Bowl would return to Atlanta in 1999. In addition, a marketing team would be established to help to promote the event.
According to Livingstone athletics director Clifton Huff, his team had to cover their travel and rooming expenses with revenue generated from the school's ticket sales to the game.
According to SIAC Commissioner Wallace Jackson, CocaCola was a sponsor to this year's Pioneer Bowl.
Advertisng from Coca Cola was not visible at Saturday's game.

Hampton, VA(OTW)-The Central Intercollegiate Atheltic Association (CIAA) announced today that it has selected Raleigh, N.C., to host its men's and women's basketball tournaments for the years 2000 through 2002. The decision was made this afternoon by the CIAA board of directors. The CIAA tournament is the third largest basketball tournament in the United States.
Four cities submitted bids to host the annual tournament: Fayetteville and Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, VA., and Winston-Salem, N.C., the current host of the 1999 Tournament.
"The selection process was especially difficult this year, due to the outstanding quality of each city under consideration," said Dr. Bernard W. Franklin, chairman of the CIAA board of directors. "The decision to award the tournament to Raleigh was based on a number of financial and non-financial factors. "The deciding factors in selecting Raleigh as the new host city were its proximity to all member schools including three in the host city area, more opportunity for student involvement, a state-of-the-art facility with more lower-level seating and expanded opportunities to attract corporate support."

"The CIAA Tournament is more than just a basketball tournament," said Leon Kerry, CIAA Commissioner. "It is a conference-wide reunion packed with activities for friends, family, and alumni to support all historically black colleges and universities."
The CIAA Tournament, a week-long event filled with some of the nations's best basketball action, draws fan support from all of the conference's 12 teams and geographic regions.
Winston-Salem has hosted the season-ending tournament for the past five years. Attendance for the 1998 six-day tournament was more than 42,000 people. The Winston-Salem Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that the 1998 tournament had an economic impact of nearly $8 million for its city.
Tickets for the 1999 Tournament, to be held at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, are on sale at campus ticket offices or by calling 888-451-CIAA.

Politically Incorrect
Foul Wind Blowing From Pioneer Bowl
by Bryan Steven Follins
Atlanta, GA(OTW)-
Here we go again. Does anyone know if there is going to be a Pioneer Bowl?? The game is scheduled to be played on December 19 in Atlanta, or is it the 18th??
This is beginning to sound a lot like last year. The game is on the schedule. That is the the good news. The bad news is just because a game is on the schedule, it does not mean it will be played. (See Johnson C. Smith vs. Virginia State).

Bad Sign: Last summer, commissioners of both the SIAC and the CIAA were supposed to get together to hammer out a final deal on the game. The meeting never happened.
Somebody give me a hit, quick.
Another Bad Sign: Neither conference is doing an active job of promoting the game.
Somebody give me a hit, quick.
Yet Another Bad Sign: There are no sponsors for the game, or at least nobody has said anything about sponsors. So, if this is the case, will the two teams, if they want to play, have to pay their own expenses? A bowl is supposed to be a reward for having a good season. This means you should not have to pay anything.
Will somebody please give me a hit??
Yet One More Bad Sign: Obviously someone in the CIAA or the SIAC office thinks that these kids, coaching staffs, fans, institutions, and writers are a joke. Obviuosly someone in the CIAA or the SIAC office does not know the meaning of common courtesy, or a straight answer. If this is the case, OBVIOUSLY someone in the CIAA or the SIAC office IS A JOKE.
