How to Get Alabama Death Certificates from the LDS Family History
Centers
Many times, the family history researcher does not need a
certified copy of a death certificate. The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Library has purchased the
microfilmed index to Alabama death certificates, and copies of Alabama death
certificates. These microfilms may be rented for use at any Family
History Center (FHC). For the location of the nearest FHC, contact
a LDS church near you. Also, the Alabama death index is available at
the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery, at the Birmingham
Public Library in the Microforms Department, and at the Special Collections
of Wallace State in Hanceville, Alabama.

-
Getting the Death Index--If you are not able to visit the libraries
mentioned above, you will need to rent the death index at your local FHC.
The Family History Library catalog on CD-ROM lists the death certificates
under "Alabama--Vital Statistics". Locate the entry in the catalog. The
first page of the entry from the CD-ROM catalog is shown below. The entry
in the online catalog is listed as Deaths, 1908-1972, index to deaths,
1908. If you are using the CD-ROM or online catalog, page down
until you find the microfilm numbers for the index. At your local FHC, order
the index microfilm based on the year of death of the person you wish to
find.
