This was a very hot, humid day in July. Temperatures were high 90's before days end. I decided to try riding 3 classes, which didn't fare as well as I would have liked. My motos were stagered with the +30A going first of my 3, a decent separation before the 250A, which ran 20 minutes, and only a 60cc moto between the 250A and the +35 class. In the first +30A, I worked my way up to second behind Scotty by race end, in a combined start of 30A&B. Disaster struck, however in the 250A, as I experience my only DNF of the year, with a burned out clutch. I did get the clutch springs replaced quickly, which fixed the problem, but missed the start of the +35 class, 2 laps behind, due to the short period between motos. I finished the race, so that I would score and avoid the DNF, which would end hopes of any prize for the day.
In the second +30A moto, After working up from 3rd off the start, I gained ground on Scotty and challenged for the lead on the last 2 laps on several occasions. But at the wire, I was second by a few inches. Since the heat was getting unbearable, and my best chance for a moto win was in the last moto of the day, I used a conservative approach to the 250A moto. Since I was only racing this to get a measure of where I stand against some the areas best pro riders, I could have picked a better day. However, if a top five moto was not possible, I intended to slow down to conserve. I was running in 6th place, and very slowly gaining on 5th place about mid way through the moto, but I was beginning to lose steam quickly, and slowed considerably to wait for my last moto of the day. Although almost comletely exhausted from heat, I watered down good and won the last +35 moto of the day. I rode a smooth race, and made no mistakes as I worked up from a mid pack start to 1st. Since I had been scored for the first moto, yet 2 laps down, I managed to get 5th overall, which was a paying position.
