| New Berlin Cemetery, Pennsylvania |
The Rev. James Barber and his wife Mary Maize Barber met, married, lived, and raised
their family in New Berlin, PA. Children included AJ (died as a child), Michael Maize, Matilda, Susannah, James
Maize, Lovina, John Knisley, Aaron W., Mary, Joseph L., and possibly one other child. Ordained as a preacher
in the Evangelical Association in 1817, James served congregations on circuits throughout central, southern, and western Pennsylvania,
Ohio, and western New York for more than 30 years before ill health forced him to retire to administrative and leadership
roles with the church until he died in 1867. To the left of his grave is that of daughter Susannah, and beyond
that, of daughter Annie B. To the right of his grave is that of wife Mary; then of son Joseph L., who died at the
age of 24 years, 3 months, 15 days; and then (beyond right edge of photograph) that of William Tea Barber. A
mystery surrounds his identity; Swanger's 1971 inventory lists him as a Barber, aged 53 years of age. This doesn't
make sense; more research required.
A project undertaken in June, 2005 by Barber descendants resulted in restoration of the headstones to pristine condition.
