Our work commenced with family documentation created circa 1908 (thanks to early family genealogist
William Wyland), and has been substantially enriched by numerous family members, notably Audra Barber Noltensmeier
in the 1930's and Mary Elizabeth Harris in the 1950's.
Cousin Ann McFarland has kindly provided information on Barber ancestors in Indiana. A descendant of James Maize Barber (brother of John Knisley Barber), she has nicely filled details
on her branch of the family, and we appreciate the assistance. Cousin Tharon
Peterson (a
descendant of James Douglas Barber, brother of C.W.) has also provided valuable input on his branch of the Barber family in
South Dakota. Paul Monnahan provided research on early Maize (Maess) and Barber relatives, as did
Dr. Don Barber, who’s done extensive research on Barber lines, and helped rule out a number of potential
connections. Rod Lacey is extensively researching his lineage, and we look forward to pooling
our research at some point in the future.
Cousin Phyllis Heller (a relative of Joseph Lutz Barber through marriage), has been tireless
in her research of Shelby County, Iowa vital statistics records, obituaries, and newspaper accounts. Cousin Sue Hallock (a descendant of Minnie Luella Lacey-Edsall), has filled in many important points of information about the
Margaret Harris Lacey Edsall family. Lola Barber Williams (daughter of Charles &
Sylvia Barber) has provided countless bits of oral history as well as family documents, photo albums, and artifacts, and has
been our continuing inspiration during this project. Gary Weston, related by marriage to the Lacey’s of Missouri, Diana Edsall
Watson and
Catherine J. Duncan (descendants
of Robert George Edsall) have helped with ancestral details. Cousin Robin
Reynolds Gold contributed
important Barber information. Cousin Sharon Babbitt has contributed family lore from the Lacey/Gardner line, and Mona Sarratt Knight, Alan Sheppard and Marilyn
Roth, RootsWeb volunteers, provided additional biographic
and background information from Shelby County, Iowa, from Jerauld County, SD, and from Mitchell, SD, respectively. Dennis Walsh of the Shelby County IAGenWeb web site was helpful to get us going way back at the start of the project. Paul Thomas,
owner and curator of the “Time Was” Museum in Elkhart, Indiana provided us with color background on life for our
Wyland ancestors a century ago in Elkhart and surroundings, and Ron Chamberlain guided us in our exploration of Shelby County in
August 2003. Wilma Miller Noyes, Evelyn Weaver, Vi Fuerst,
and Phyllis Arhart helped
with details of Jerauld County (South Dakota) history. Anabelle Peterson provided enrichment about
the Harris and Lacey families. Peggy Hanson, Janine Labath, and Sharol Andersen have added details on descendants
of John C. Harris. Janice Miller Hales, has sent information on descendants of James Douglas Barber’s daughter Winnie Barber Miller,
with more to come. Recently, we’ve connected with Jergen
L. Barber, Margaret Rosman Murphy, and Kathryn Barber Rosman Fuller, grandchildren of Joseph Lutz Barber, and we've thus been able to
add many more details on J.L.’s descendants.
In the summer of 2004, we connected with Ella Belle Harris Coyle
and Wilbur Coyle, and Mary Marie Albert Bickford and her family, descendants of Arabelle
Barber Harris, and with John and Verna Erickson, descendants of Effie Barber Erickson. We've also worked
closely with Ina Meink Oerlline, daughter of Lucille Louisa Barber Meink and grand-daughter of James Douglas
Barber. In 1994 she did extensive documentation on the JD Barber family line, and we've helped her update and publish this
work: The Family History of James Douglas Barber. To obtain a copy, contact Ina or your
faithful Webmaster. Thanks also to Verva Barber Taft, Vivian Miller Sarsam and Joan
Mulliner, to Neil and Jean Kuiken, to Gary L. Barber, to Dell Barber, to
Kalen Schloyer, and to Lynn Gibbs and Ken Gibbs for sharing
anecdotes, memories, and connections.
We particularly appreciated
the assistance of the Nishnabotna Historical Society (Shelby
County, Iowa), the Dunham Historical Society (Jerauld
County, South Dakota), the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and the Shelby
County Historical Society (Harlan, Iowa), where Mel Clothier,
Tom Merritt, Marie Arentson, and
Joyce Fay welcomed
our visit to their museum. And in 2004, Tom Finsterbush
of the Evangelical Association in central Pennsylvania provided exciting new information on the life and career of the Reverend
James Barber, our Great-great grandfather, and we received valuable new information from the Lancaster County Historical
Society (Lancaster, PA), the Union County Historical Society (Lewisburg, PA), and Dr.
Milton Loyer of the Historical Society of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Thanks to all these contributors!
