The Barbers of Jerauld County

Many different Barber, Miller, Meink, and Harris descendants can trace their lineage to six Barber families of Jerauld County, South Dakota -- and that's not ALL the South Dakota Barbers!

* J. Frank Barber and Nettie May Carter Barber, of Lane, South Dakota and then Rapid City;
* Charles William Barber and Sylvia Edith Lacey Barber;
James Douglas Barber and Minnie Arena Whitted Barber;
Winnie Barber Miller, daughter of JD Barber, who married Charlie Miller.
   (These four families lived and farmed around Lane, South Dakota)
* Arabelle Barber Harris, who married Ira Jasper Harris, and lived in Madison, South Dakota from about 1914; he owned and managed several farms in Jerauld County.

*  Unrelated to these Barbers, Chauncy Barber and his brother William brought their families to South Dakota some forty or fifty years earlier.  They were the true "homesteaders" who earned the right of ownership by occupying the land.  Their descendants still live on the original homestead!

The story of their lives has now been published in a 316-page book including mini-bio's, photos, news clips, and other anecdotes and memories about their lives in Jerauld County.
