In obediance to a commission to us directed from the Hon'ble Judges of the Superior Court of Law & Court of Equity for the district of Salisbury & State of North Carolina we have caused General MARTIN ARMSTRONG to come before us then to give Testimony in a certain suit now depending in said Court wherin JONATHAN HAINES is the next friend of the Orphans of WILLIAM RIDGE Plaintiffs & WILLIAM T. LEWIS, WILLIAM COOK & others are defendants-

Deposeth & saith that in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty (as he believes) WILLIAM T. LEWIS made application to him (this deponent) for an order to Capt. JOSEPH CLOUD to deliver into the hands of him the said W. T. LEWIS, a certain Negroe, which he said LEWIS produced to him this deponent, such vouchers as induced him (this deponent) as a Justice of the Peace, to believe that the property of said Negroes was vested in him the said LEWIS, and from such belief, he, this deponent gave an order to him the said LEWIS, for said CLOUD to deliver the said Negroe to him as his property as aforesaid. This deponenet further saith that he at this time, doth not remember the name of said Negroe, nor who the said Negroe belonged to, before the said Negroe became the porperty of said LEWIS, and believes the said LEWIS produced him this deponent a Bill of Sale for said Negroe. And Further saith not.

We do certify that the above mentioned MARTIN ARMSTRONG was duly called upon & interogated before us at the house of JOHN CHILDRESS in the 6th day of December 1800.
