"In Obedience to a commission directed from the Hon'ble Judges of the Superior of Law & court of equity for the district of Salisbury & State of No Carolina, we have proceeded to take the deposition of HANNAH BALDWIN of lawful age in a matter of controversy in said Court depending, wherein JONATHAN HAINES as the next friend of the Orphans of WILLIAM RIDGE is Plaintiff, &WILLIAM T. LEWIS, WILLIAM COOK & others are defendants.

This deponant being sworn agreeable to Law, deposeth & sayeth, that she hath been acquainted with WILLIAM T LEWIS Twenty odd years & is also well acquainted with two of the Negroes now in dispute (viz) SALL, & NAN, & that she always knew that s'd WILLIAM T. LEWIS got said two negroes SALL & NAN of WILLIAM RIDGE for him the said WILLIAM T. LEWIS to find & put a man in the Continental Service, in the place of WILLIAM RIDGE'S son GODFREY RIDGE, which was a delinquent from the nine months draughts. This deponant further sayeth that she knew NAN to be in the possession of WILLIAM T LEWIS in the year one thousand seven hundred & eighty & SAL early in the year one thousand seven hundred & eighty one, in consequence of the aforesaid contract & Bill of sale given to WILLIAM T LEWIS by WILLIAM RIDGE for said two Negroes SAL & NAN.

"Question asked the deponant in behalf the defendant. Do you know the characters of either Thomas COODY, Wiliam COODY, Godfrey COODEY, John COMBS, William COMBS, Mason COMBS or the character of the COODYS & COMBS in general if you do relate it,

"Ans'r I understood that two of the COMBS'S had joined the Tory party & after their return, one of them got killed by the Whigs & further this deponant sayeth not

We do hereby certify that the above HANNAH BALDWIN was sworn & interrogated before us at the dwelling House of ROBERT EDMONDSEN in the County of Davidson district of mero & State of Tennessee this 2nd day of December 1800.
