"In Obedience to a commission to us directed from the Hon'ble the Judges of the Superior Court of Law & Court of Equity for the district of Salisbury & State of North Carolina. We have proceeded to take the deposition of John CHILDRESS SEN'R of lawfull age in a matter of Controversy in said Court depending wherein JONATHAN HAINES as the next friend of the orphants of WILLIAM RIDGE is plaintiff &WILLIAM T LEWIS, WILLIAM COOK & others are defendants,

This deponent being sworn agreeable to Law deposeth & saith, that he this deponant saith that about 15 or 16 years ago, he acted as a Justice of the Peace for the County of Surry North Carolina and Winnifred ALLEN, formerly the wife of Wm RIDGE made oath before me that Wm T LEWIS had purchased two negro girls of her husband, by the names of SAL & NAN and that she did not wish him to be troubled or sued for said negroes - and further this deponent saith not.

WE do certify that the within deponant John CHILDRESS was duly sworn and examined at his own house in the County of Davidson, District of Mero & the State of Tennessee on the 6th day of December 1800.
