Agreeable to a Didamous petition to us directed from the Honourable the Juges of the Superior Cort of Law and Equity for the District of Salisbury State of North Carolina we have caused to come before us David RUSSELL Esq'r and being duly sworn on the Wholy Evalingalist of almighty God in a certain matter of controversey now depending in s'd Court of Equity for the District of Salisbury in State of No Carolina, wheras Jonathan HANES is next friend to the hires of William RIDGE Deceased plaintiff and William T. LEWIS & Wm COOK and others Defendant with that on the twentyeth of march one thousand seven hundred and ninety that Stage COOK came before him this deponant & Colo. Joseph HARDIN who was acting Justice of s'd county of Green and proved a Bill of sale given by Wm RIDGE to Wm T LEWIS for two Negrow girles as follows

Know all men by these presence that I Wm RIDGE of the County of Surry & State of No Carolina for & in the consideration of the sum of one hundred & twenty pounds to me in hand paid by Wm T. LEWIS of the County & State before mentioned at and before the sealing & delivering of these presents the receipt whereof I do acknowledge that I have bargained & sold confirmed & delivered and do by these present bargain & sel-- confirm and deliver Two Negrows by name SALL & NAN of a Milattrish Cumplection unto the s'd Wm T. LEWIS. SALL about thirteen years old and NAN about eleven year old for and in consideration of the above sum of one hundred and twenty pounds paid to me by s'd Wm T. LEWIS and further for s'd Wm T. LEWIS to have & to hold all and singular the s'd Negroes and every of them by the s'd presents bargained adn sold granted & confirmed unto the only propper use & behalf of him the s'd Wm T. LEWIS his Executors Administrators or assigns for ever & the s'd Wm RIDGE for my Selfe my Executors & Administrators all & singular the s'd Negrows I will warrant & for ever defend unto the s'd Wm T. LEWIS his Executors administrators & assigns against me the s'd Wm RIDGE my Executors administrators & assigns and against all and every other purson or pursons whatsoever. in witnes whereof I have hearunto set my Hand and affixed my seal this 5th Day of May 1780 sign'd seal'd and delivered in the presence of & the word seal'd was interlined before signed & acknowledged

In obedience to a Commission to us directed from the Hon'ble the Judges of the Superior Court of Law and Court of Equaty held for the District of Salisbury in the State of North Carolina we have proceeded to take the Deposition of David Russell Esq'r in a matter of controvercy in said Court of Equaty depending wherein Jonathan Haines as the next friend of the orphins of Wm Ridge is plaintiff and Wm T Lewis Wm Cook and others are Defendants which being sworn agreable to Law Deposeth and Sayeth,, that on the 20th of March in the year 1790 there was a Commission from the worshipfull the County Court of Surry, North Carolina Directed to this Deponant and Col'o Joseph Hardin then acting Justices for green County for them to Take the Deposition of Stadge Cook and others in a matter of Controvercy in said Court of Surry County North Carolina then Depending wherein Wm Cook and Jonathan Haines as the gardins of the Children of Wm Ridge was plantiffs and Wm T Lewis is Defendant, which Stadge Cook came forward and after being solomly swarn provided a Bill of Sail givin by William Ridge to Wm T Lewis in the words following

This Deponant sayeth that the said Stage Cook proved the said Bill of Sail alluded to before this Deponant and Col'o Joseph Hardin truley and voluntarely this Deponant further sayeth that there was a probate on the Back of said Bill of Sail where said Stage Cook had proved the same before Zach Ray Esp'r on the 14th of May 1787 and the Deposition of John McCONNALL on the 2th of June 1790 before Zach RAY Esq'r and OM BENGE also another from the assistant Clerk of Surry Count in the words following

Nov'r Court 1790 this Bill of Sail was proved in open Court by the oath of James M. Lewis and Ordered to be Recorded.

This Deponant further sayeth that there is also on the back of the Bill of Sail that was proven before this Deponant and Joseph Hardin by Stage Cook an Certifycate Signed by Joseph Hardin and this Deponant in the words following

to Peter Spence's Deposition - 3d It does not appear that it was taken at
Jefferson Court House in Jefferson County - 4 The notice names two days & the
deposition was taken on the first.:
