In obedience to a commission to us and from the Hon'ble Judges of the Superior Court of Law & Court of Equity for the district of Salisbury & State of No Carolina, We have proceeded the deposition of ANNA McCONNELL of lawfull age, in a suit now depending in said Court, wherein JONATHAN HAINES is the next friend to the children of WILLIAM RIDGE is plaintiff & WILLIAM T. LEWIS & others are defendant.

Deposeth & saith that she moved from Virginia to No Carolina in the year 1781 into the County of Surry & State aforesaid. That she was then acquainted with WILLIAM T. LEWIS one of the present defendants & well known that he had at that time in his possession two of the Negroes now in dispute, viz. SAL & NAN. This deponant further says that she was then informed that the said WILLIAM T. LEWIS had been robb'd before that time by one JOHN GOINGS & one COMBS of a quantity of clothes his papers and &c. And that he WILLIAM T LEWIS got the said Negroes SAL & NAN from WILLIAM RIDGE for getting a substitute in the service in the place of his son GODFREY RIDGE.

Question asked the deponant in behalf the defendants- do you know any thing of THOMAS COODY, WILLIAM COODY, GODFREY COODY, JOHN COMBS, WILLIAM COMBS, MASON COMBS or the family of the COODYS & COMBS in general. If you do declare it.

Ans'r. report said they were very bad men & that some of the COMBS rob'd & murdered a man in Mecklenburgh County by the name of BRADLY.

Question the 2nd by the defendants. Do you know any other children of WILLIAM RIDGE than what is mentioned in the Complainants Bill of Complaint. If you do say so.

Ans'd. I have heard of his having a son by the name of GODFREY & did know him to have a child by the name of NANCY (that was at least generally called his child) & further this deponant saith not.
