    WHO IS ELIGIBLE

For Academic Exchanges, any male or female between the ages of 15 and 18 who have never participated in a program exchange are eligible to apply.  For students wanting an Academic Exchange, they need to be able to converse in the native language of the country they are looking to exchange to.  For instance, a German wanting to exchange to America MUST be able to speak, and understand English well enough to maintain at the very least, a "C" average in their American High School.  An American wishing to exchange to Japan for an Academic Exchange MUST be able to both speak, and understand Japanese etc. etc.

For Cultural Exchanges only (student DOES NOT attend school), any male or female between the ages of 12 and 18 are eligible to apply.  The applicant does not need to speak the language of the country which they are exchanging to, however, any participant is STRONGLY encouraged to try to learn conversational speaking.  Participants in a Cultural exchange may reside with a host family, or travel with an escort to a specific country (hotels are used for the shorter term cultural exchanges).  These participants will experience the culture of the country they selected for periods ranging from 1 week (escorted) to 2 months (summer w/host family).   These cultural exchanges may be done as an individual or with a group.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A PARTICIPANT

The desire to learn and become part of another culture is the single most important requirement.  As an Academic Exchange participant, the student will become a part of his or her host family.  The student will NOT be a guest, but rather a fully participating family member with chores and rules.  This is the more difficult of the two exchanges because not just will you have to be adaptable in accepting your new family's lifestyle which may differ greatly from your own, but you will also have to maintain acceptable academic performance while attending a school where they do not speak your native tongue.  This exchange however is usually a life changing experience which will give you insight into how other live as well as give you the opportunity to become fluent in the language of the country you are exchanging to.  Two memories that will last a lifetime!

Becoming a Cultural Exchange participant is more for those who want a "taste" of what life is like in another country.  These students will eat foods native to the country they visit, visit historical sights, learn about the people and much much more.  In this type of exchange, you will be more like a tourist than a student per se.  This type of exchange is ideal for those who are a bit apprehensive about undertaking a full Academic Exchange just yet.  Our "escorts" are guides with extensive experience who make sure all your senses receive equal cultural exposure.  Participants in this exchange need to possess one main attribute, the willingness to experience different things!

    HOW MUCH CAN IT COST

The cost of Academic Exchanges vary widely depending on several factors including, but not limited to, destination, public or private school, length of exchange, etc. For those students not as fluent in the language of the country they select, F.I.T. can sometimes find a private school where they speak YOUR language.  This naturally costs much more, but allows those students to participate. Airfare IS NOT included in F.I.T.'s prices.  Neither is the cost of securing visas, but F.I.T. will provide assistance, without cost on both of these matters.

Cultural Exchange prices can vary greatly as it depends on where you want to go, whether you want to travel with a group or just by yourself along with a private escort.  F.I.T. customizes these exchanges and have some as low as $1,000.00US (1 week New York - London group) and as high as $25,000.00US (2 month multi-continent private).  Airfare IS included in F.I.T.'s Cultural Exchanges.  We will try to accomodate you in any way we can because we believe that traveling and experiencing another culture is so very important to the future of all people.

    WHERE CAN I GO

Academic Exchanges are available throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.  F.I.T. suggests that prospective exchange students exchange to a country where a different language is spoken from their native tongue.  We believe that gaining command of another language is so much a part of becoming an Academic Exchange participant.  However, this is not mandatory, but rather just a recommendation.  We realize that many American teens today do not possess the necessary language skills required for an Academic exchange in a non-English speaking country, and as such, we offer programs to New Zealand, and Australia.  F.I.T. has offices and partner programs around the world.  We take great pride in the scrutiny we use in selecting such partners.

Cultural Exchanges can be to ANYWHERE that is considered safe, ie; we are currently NOT conducting Cultural Exchanges to Libya or Iraq among other countries.  We have taken students around the world, on safaris, to the ends of the earth. literally!
