HITTIN' THE ROAD

MARCUS HUMMON

Mom and daddy had a place by a river

an old red barn on top of a hill

shoulder high corn, a couple bad winters

government loan couldn't pay the bill

we auctioned off a tractor, and an antique dresser

i even offered up a fishing pole

bankman says, it sure is a pity...

to see such nice folks hit the road

CHORUS: sometimes you've got to cut and run

sometimes you've got to keep holding on

just when you think you are finally home

off you go, all your life

you hit the road

worked in a mill on the ohio

greasin' up gears on japanese cars

raisin' a family, squeezin' on a dollar

layin in a hammock starin' at the stars

when bad news came in the shape of a letter

with two weeks pay and then off you go...

we're scaling back, it's all for the better...

c'mon baby let's hit the road

CHORUS: sometimes you've got to cut and run

sometimes you've got to keep holding on

just when you think you are finally home

off you go, all your life

you hit the road

i settled down in a small town in the country

building willow rocking chairs

after all these years, don't it seem funny

sinking roots, lifting prayers

my little boy says my daddy's gone crazy...

he's down on his knees

where the green grass grows...

i'm slammin' my fist into the black dirt sayin'

watch this son, i'm hitting the road
