Marcus says goodbye to Stuart
When I first met Stuart, we were
out in the yard with my oldest son Levi, kicking a soccer ball. Upon
hearing Stuarts' heavy Scottish accent, my 6 year old asked Stuart, "have
you ever lived in a Castle?" Stuart replied with a twinkle in his
eye that he had not only lived in a castle, but that he had once owned
one!
Impressed with this
but always curious, Levi, as if sensing intuitively the range of this man's
experience, asked him another question. To my embarrassment,
Levi
asked, "Have you ever been in jail?" Before
I could apologize for Levi, Stuart quickly answered, "Ay, I have, and its
no place for you!"
What do we know of someone,
even those we are close to? Perhaps not much. Still, I know
Stuart was a good man who experienced breathtaking highs and desperate
lows, who loved his children, who was a great artist, a fine fisherman...a
generous and dear friend. I also know that he was deeply troubled,
as it turns out, beyond my reach. It was an honor to make music with
such a great Scottish artist, and to be his friend. I miss him.
God bless him and his family.
