Wade's Media Site Choices
Independent Media is a loose term usually applied to those
filmmakers, videomakers, audio producers, and (increasingly) cyber-producers
who undertake work on their own and retain editorial and stylistic control
over it, the media equivalent of the artist or the independent freelance
journalist. They includes producer/artists as diverse as Barbara Kopple
and Nam June Paik and Jay Allison and Victor Nunez and the folks at Appalshop.
Sometimes they make it onto the big screen or commercial broadcast, but
generally you can look for their work on PBS or NPR or PRI or at your local
museum or screening society. As far as I can tell, they haven't settled
on a single online home, but the following sites all show occasional (or
frequent!) flashes of independent spirit.
Note: I have not found websites for AIVF (Association for Independent
Video and Film) or for NAMAC (National Alliance for Media and Culture).
Can someone help?
This is a work in progress. More to come. #8->
