My Suggestions for This Course

I highly suggest communicating with someone fluent in Japanese as you take this course.  It can be a friend who knows the language or you can find a Japanese pen-pal.  Furthermore I suggest you try writing your own Japanese sentences and have your friend or pen-pal look at them.  I have found the Japanese word processor JWPce to be very helpfull in writing Japanese because it has a built in Japanese dictionary.  You can find links to JWPce and The PenPal network in my links section.

If you are planning on sending letters electronically to your pen-pal then hand write the Japanese portion on a piece of paper.  By doing this you will probably learn to write and even read the kanji faster.

Requirements for Starting

These lessons assume you already know how to read and write kana which is the phonetic writing system of Japanese.  If you do not know kana yet you can learn at Beginner Level Japanese Course Home Page.  Furthermore the lessons will be in Unicode in Japanese text so you will need a browser that has Japanese display capabilities.  If the text in the lessons just looks like a bunch of garbage then check with your browser's web-site to find out how to display Japanese text.
