Greetings
One of the most common greetings in Japan is こんにちは which is used during the day after 12:00 noon.  Of course just as in English chat rooms perfect spelling and gramar are often not used and shortcuts are taken.  こんにちは is often shortened to just こん.  Always be on the look out for these things and creative ways of spelling words.  Furthermore, while chatting in Japanese chat rooms remember the time difference.  Japan is GMT + 09:00 hours. Other greetings include おはようございます often shortened to おは or おはよう meaning good morning and こんばんは meaning good afternoon.  When going to bed one might use the expresion お休みなさい meaning good night. When introducing oneself for the first time use the expresion for "How do you do" "初めまして" followed by "[name] is" "[name]です。" and finally "nice to meet you" "どぞよろしく".  Note that in Japanese spaces are not used in sentences so ther is no need for a space between [your name] and です. Asking One's Age In Japanese verbs often come at the end of sentences.  Furthermore, that which is understod such as who the subject is may be omited.  We saw this in the sentence saying "My name is [name]." which was simply reduced to "[name]is." or in Japanese "[name]です。"  So when asking "What is your age" "is" also comes at the end of the sentence and "your" isn't even used.  The completed sentence is in the order of "What age is?". But there is one final part of speech we must add in Japanese to make it a question.  We need to add a particle which is like nothing we have in English.  In this case we add the question marker か to the end of the sentence.  So to ask "how old are you?" we say "何歳ですか。" |
