Very often, I hear the critics say that the Christian rock musicians do not use the name of Jesus enough in their lyrics, and therefore the lyrics are too light theologically. I thought it would be fun to take the critic's own guidelines, and apply them to great church music of the past. The critics guidelines, that they apply to Christian rock lyrics, are:
When I applied the criteria above to hymns from The Cyber Hymnal, the results astonished me! I thought I was going to have to search long and hard for examples to prove my point. To the contrary - I found that many of the most famous and most loved hymns do not say the name "Jesus" at all! If you criticize Christian rock artists for not explicitly using the name "Jesus", then you have to criticize the great men and women of faith pictured below.

I have a little quiz for you Christian rock critics. Name each composer above, and the hymn they wrote that does not contain the name "Jesus".
Here is one answer to get you started: yes, there IS a picture of Fanny Crosby there. Her hymns "I Am Thine, O Lord" and "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior" (at least) do not contain the name "Jesus". Are you going to criticize her the way do Christian rock artists? Why not? The answer is simple, you like Fanny's music, and not Christian rock.
Incidentally, for Christian rock fans - the pencil sketch is NOT Rebecca St. James. The lady pictured is Sarah Fuller Flower Adams 1805-1848. She wrote "Nearer, My God, to Thee".
The answers to the quiz are found at the bottom of this page.
I list the hymns below in a spirit of reverence and respect, not just to say "I told you so". Please read them not for what is absent - the name "Jesus", but for what IS there - great messages of faith and love for Him. And when you listen to Christian rock, listen to it for the great messages of faith and love for Jesus Christ, even when His name is not mentioned explicitly as it is not in these songs.
GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be. Refrain Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain |
AMAZING GRACE Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we'd first begun. |
BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; His day is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on. I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel; "As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal"; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel, Since God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat; Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him; be jubilant, my feet; Our God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free; While God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on. He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave; So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave, Our God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on. |
BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like that to that above. Before our Father's throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one Our comforts and our cares. We share each other's woes, Our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, It gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart, And hope to meet again. This glorious hope revives Our courage by the way; While each in expectation lives, And longs to see the day. From sorrow, toil and pain, And sin, we shall be free, And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity. |
BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness, Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve; Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. Refrain Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves, Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves, Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows, Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze; By and by the harvest, and the labor ended, We shall come rejoicing, in bringing in the sheaves. Refrain Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master, Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves; When our weeping's over, He will bid us welcome, We shall come rejoicing, in bringing in the sheaves. Refrain |
CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne. Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him the virgin's Son, the God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now His brow adorn; Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem; The root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem. Crown Him the Son of God, before the worlds began, And ye who tread where He hath trod, crown Him the Son of Man; Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast, And takes and bears them for His own, that all in Him may rest. Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave, And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of peace, Whose power a scepter sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end, and round His piercèd feet Fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side, Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bends His burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the King to Whom is given the wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns, as thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is King of all. Crown Him the Lord of lords, who over all doth reign, Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for ransomed sinners slain, Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing Their songs before Him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King. Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me; Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. |
DRAW ME NEARER I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me; But I long to rise in the arms of faith And be closer drawn to Thee. Refrain Draw me nearer, nearer blessèd Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died. Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessèd Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the power of grace divine; Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine. Refrain O the pure delight of a single hour That before Thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God I commune as friend with friend! Refrain There are depths of love that I cannot know Till I cross the narrow sea; There are heights of joy that I may not reach Till I rest in peace with Thee. Refrain |
FAITH OF OUR FATHERS Faith of our fathers, living still, In spite of dungeon, fire and sword; O how our hearts beat high with joy Whenever we hear that glorious Word! HAVE THINE OWN WAY Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Thou art the Potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me after Thy will, While I am waiting, yielded and still. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Search me and try me, Master, today! Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now, As in Thy presence humbly I bow. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Wounded and weary, help me, I pray! Power, all power, surely is Thine! Touch me and heal me, Savior divine. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Hold o'er my being absolute sway! Fill with Thy Spirit 'till all shall see Christ only, always, living in me. |
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who was, and is, and evermore shall be. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity! |
I COME TO THE GARDEN ALONE I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear falling on my ear The Son of God discloses. Refrain And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own; And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known. He speaks, and the sound of His voice, Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing. Refrain I'd stay in the garden with Him Though the night around me be falling, But He bids me go; through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling. Refrain |
IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold; "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats over all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains, they bend on hovering wing, And ever over its Babel sounds the blessèd angels sing. But with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; Beneath the angel strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not the love song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife and hear the angels sing. And ye, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing! For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet seen of old, When with the ever circling years shall come the time foretold When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing. |
IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Refrain It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul. Refrain My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Refrain And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul. Refrain |
JOY TO THE WORLD Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love. |
WE'RE MARCHING TO ZION Come, we that love the Lord, And let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, Join in a song with sweet accord And thus surround the throne, And thus surround the throne. Refrain We're marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We're marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God. Refrain There we shall see His face, And never, never sin! There, from the rivers of His grace, There, from the rivers of His grace, Drink endless pleasures in, Drink endless pleasures in. Refrain Yea, and before we rise, To that immortal state, The thoughts of such amazing bliss, The thoughts of such amazing bliss, Should constant joys create, Should constant joys create. Refrain The men of grace have found, Glory begun below. Celestial fruit on earthly ground Celestial fruit on earthly ground From faith and hope may grow, From faith and hope may grow. Refrain The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets Before we reach the heavenly fields, Before we reach the heavenly fields, Or walk the golden streets, Or walk the golden streets. Refrain Then let our songs abound, And every tear be dry; We're marching through Emmanuel's ground, We're marching through Emmanuel's ground, To fairer worlds on high, To fairer worlds on high. Refrain |
NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee! Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone. Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God to Thee. Refrain There let the way appear, steps unto heav'n; All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given; Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise; So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I'll fly, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain There in my Father's home, safe and at rest, There in my Savior's love, perfectly blest; Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee. Refrain |
PASS ME NOT, O GENTLE SAVIOR Pass me not, O gentle Savior, hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by. Refrain Savior, Savior, hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by. Let me at Thy throne of mercy find a sweet relief, Kneeling there in deep contrition; help my unbelief. Refrain Trusting only in Thy merit, would I seek Thy face; Heal my wounded, broken spirit, save me by Thy grace. Refrain Thou the spring of all my comfort, more than life to me, Whom have I on earth beside Thee? Whom in heaven but Thee? Refrain |
PRAISE GOD, FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW Awake, my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise, To pay thy morning sacrifice. Redeem thy misspent time that's past, And live this day as if thy last; Improve thy talent with due care; For the great day thyself prepare. By influence of the Light divine Let thy own light to others shine. Reflect all heaven's propitious ways In ardent love, and cheerful praise. In conversation be sincere; Keep conscience as the noontide clear; Think how all seeing God thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys. Awake, lift up thyself, my heart, And with the angels hear thy part, Who all night long unwearied sing High praise to the eternal King. All praise to Thee, Who safe has kept And hast refreshed me while I slept Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake I may of endless light partake. Lord, I my vows to Thee renew; Disperse my sins as morning dew; Guard my first springs of thought and will, And with Thyself my spirit fill. Direct, control, suggest, this day, All I design, or do, or say, That all my powers, with all their might, In Thy sole glory may unite. Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. |
ROCK OF AGES Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, from Thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure; save from wrath and make me pure. Not the labor of my hands can fulfill Thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; helpless look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, see Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee. |
SHALL WE GATHER AT THE RIVER Shall we gather at the river, Where bright angel feet have trod, With its crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God? Refrain Yes, we'll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river; Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God. On the margin of the river, Washing up its silver spray, We will talk and worship ever, All the happy golden day. Refrain Ere we reach the shining river, Lay we every burden down; Grace our spirits will deliver, And provide a robe and crown. Refrain At the smiling of the river, Mirror of the Savior's face, Saints, whom death will never sever, Lift their songs of saving grace. Refrain Soon we'll reach the shining river, Soon our pilgrimage will cease; Soon our happy hearts will quiver With the melody of peace. Refrain |
WE THREE KINGS We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. Born a King on Bethlehem's plain Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign. Refrain Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worshipping God on high. Refrain Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb. Refrain Glorious now behold Him arise; King and God and sacrifice; Alleluia, Alleluia, Sounds through the earth and skies. Refrain |
WHAT CHILD IS THIS What Child is this who, laid to rest On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The Babe, the Son of Mary. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh, Come peasant, king to own Him; The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise a song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy for Christ is born, The Babe, the Son of Mary. |
WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair; When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore, And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there. Refrain Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care; Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there. Refrain |
WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN There are loved ones in the glory, Whose dear forms you often miss; When you close your earthly story, Will you join them in their bliss? Refrain Will the circle be unbroken By and by, by and by? In a better home waiting In the sky, in the sky? In the joyous days of childhood, Oft they told of wondrous love, Pointed to the dying Savior Now they dwell with Him above. Refrain You can picture happy gatherings Round the fireside long ago, And you think of tearful partings, When they left you here below: Refrain One by one their seats were emptied, One by one they went away; Here the circle has been broken - Will it be complete one day? Refrain |

|
Thanks for playing! I am sorry I don't have a prize. Hopefully this has been an interesting bit of Christian musical trivia for you! Incidentally, if you expand the criteria to include the name "Christ", as well as Jesus, you are still left with 19 hymns here that do not use the names "Jesus" or "Christ". If you add "Savior" to the list, there are still 12 hymns (or half of the list).
