Top Scriptural Reasons Against Christian Rock - ANSWERED!

Argument: Christian rock music is inspired by satan.

Not surprisingly, the Christian rock critics almost abandon scriptural references (because there are NONE) at this point, usually quoting SECULAR sources. I found this quote on one critic's site:

Rock music was developed and inspired by people who were demon inspired or possessed. These people designed the music, by playing the notes and chords on instruments, for the sole purpose of gratifying the flesh and demonic influence that inspired them. The volume, intensity, decadent arraignment and mutilation of the time-honored use of melody, were out of the abundance of their tortured, enslaved, heart.

What a mouthful! I bet they worked a while on THAT wording --- unfortunately it does not fit the facts. The origin of the rock style has more to do with the history of the black church in the United States in the last century, and the sin of slavery in our nation, than it does with demon inspiration. Now, if the Christian rock critics had stated that "some, perhaps most secular rock music is demon inspired", I would have no argument with them. Secular artists have taken a musical style and used it in some cases to serve satan, but the musical style itself is not at fault. No more at fault than the style of classical music is for the obsession Adolf Hitler had for the works of Richard Wagner:

Adolf Hitler said that "Whoever wants to understand National Socialistic Germany must know Wagner." Hitler's appropriation of the Bayreuth Wagner Festival was to serve his own cultural propaganda purposes. Wagner was a cultural hero for Hitler and his Nazis. The strains of Wagner were played during the Nazis' book-burning ceremonies and when concentration camp prisoners were about to be put to death. Nazi Germany's main defense fortification was called the "Siegfried Line," after the mythic hero in Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. --- The Aryan Myth: Richard Wagner

I would like to see you try to find a man more demon inspired and demon controlled than Hitler. Other sources report that he would listen to "Ring of the Nibelung" for hours prior to new waves of persecution against the Jews, and before new military campaigns. Wagner, himself, was strongly anti-semitic, and there is no evidence he ever repented of this sin. Therefore his own spiritual condition is very much in doubt, and he could have very easily been under the influence of demons when he wrote some of his music. But this cannot be used to invalidate the entire style of classical music any more than demon inspired secular rock musicians invalidate the style of rock music.

Satan is sometimes referred to as the angel (before the fall) that was responsible for music in heaven. Now he is supposed to be using music as a way to deceive the elect. I just spent half an hour with a Bible CD rom, searching the KJV and NIV Bibles for the words "satan", "lucifer","devil" and "Beelzebub", and found ABSOLUTELY NO SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT for satan being God's choir director in heaven before he fell!

One critic finally gave a scripture reference on this (thank you!):

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the Beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. --- EZ 28:13, KJV

Looking up the whole passage in a better translation:

12. "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "`You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

Oops! The musical instruments in V13 disappear! I persue the truth honestly, without fear. The musical instruments ARE there in the literal Hebrew, and the NIV passage above was WRONG to word the passage as it did - gold belonged with precious stones in the previous sentence. I think that both the KJV and the NIV translation of verse 13 lose it - they really don't make any sense. The NAS is better, but still leaves the instruments out. Here is my stab at a readable version of the literal Hebrew:

The creative ability to make and play your small drums and flutes was within you from the day you were created.

This is the best I can do, and even I admit that it tends to support a "musical" devil. But this is a long way from the Bible saying that satan was an important, or the main musician in heaven before the fall. And flutes and small drums are a long way from rock music - stringed instruments are not even mentioned! The passage describes him as a "guardian" angel - the head of a heavenly security force, for lack of a better term. Since God did not need to fear any external enemy, satan was obviously guarding against rebellion in the ranks of the created beings, or angels. But - who guards the guardian? Satan was able to use his trusted position for his own rebellion. This is my own opinion, but I think God knew all along. I think it was part of His plan to ultimately give man free will. To be, in a sense, his own God. Man - by accepting Jesus Christ - surrenders that personal "godhood" back to God.

I can see a little glimpse, perhaps, of what happened here. I don't think God was listing the blessings satan was bestowed when he described satan's attire. I think God was showing that satan, from the beginning, had a vain and selfish ego. This ego led to the fall. Music was a part of satan's ego and personna, but not the cause of his fall. The rebellion was.

I looked for some good material on exactly who satan is. I have adapted the passage that follows from one of the critic's sites:

When Satan was created, his name was Lucifer. He was perfect in beauty. His job was to guard the throne of God. He was the covering Cherub, the highest position in Heaven under God. Ezekiel 28:14 The Word of God says of Lucifer: "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created... Till iniquity was found in thee." Ezekiel 28:15. That iniquity was soon to come:

12. How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13. You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." --- Isaiah 14:12-14

God found Lucifer and his rebellious angels guilty of treason. John 5:22 "Thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee... I will cast thee to the ground." Ezek 28:16-17 The Word of God, Lucifer's deadliest enemy, had sealed his fate. Lucifer knew his final destination would be in the lake of fire with his fallen angels. Matt 25:41

God changed Lucifer's name to Satan, and he and his rebellious angels were thrown out of heaven... down to the planet earth; when it was without form and void. Genesis 1:2 Satan and his fallen angels ended up in the atmosphere surrounding the planet. One of Satan's titles is the Prince of Power of the air." He believed the planet Earth was his. Ephesians 2:2b

When "The Word" of God created Adam, Satan was furious because God had put Adam in control of the earth. And God walked and talked with Adam. Genesis 1:26-28. Satan knew if he could make Adam sin then Satan could gain control and destroy mankind which he despises.

Satan made his move, and Adam fell into sin... beginning Adam's nightmare. Fellowship with God was broken. Man died spiritually, and he developed a rebellious nature. Satan became his master. Satan's new title was "The god of this world." John 12:31 2Cor 4:4. The earth became the battlefield for the souls of men. Satan's army of fallen angels became demonic forces under his command. To destroy mankind through wars, famine, disease, etc. 1Peter 5:8. The Word of God says Satan has blinded the minds of men... The devil intends to take as many souls to hell as he possibly can. 2 Cor 4:3-4. but God has limited Satan's activities. Job 1:10 and 2-6c. Even today, Satan can only go as far as God allows him. Luke 22:31-32

When Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Satan went wild. The devil realized his deadliest enemy, the very One who threw him out of heaven, had taken the form of flesh... and they called His name Jesus. "And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us," John 1:14. "He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not." John 1:10. "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6. The Creator came to earth to die as a sacrifice for sinful man. Jesus who knew no sin, became sin for us. 2 Cor 5:21. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 He shed His precious blood to wash away our sins. Rev 1:5 But "...he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:18

The Lord Jesus was crucified and died. Satan's nightmare hit with the resurrection of Jesus. His tomb was empty. The resurrected Jesus was seen by over 500 witnesses, and the news of this momentous even changed world history. 1 Cor 15:3-6. Before going back up into heaven, the Lord Jesus gave final instructions to His disciples and told them of His second coming. Acts 1:4-11. Before Jesus was caught up into the heavens, Satan was already spreading lies to kill the truth. Roman soldiers were paid off to say that the body of Jesus was stolen. Matt 28:15 But the people didn't buy it. And the gospel spread everywhere. Knowing his time was short, Satan declared war on Christ's teachings. The Word of God says, "... it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:..." Heb 9:27. Satan countered this by creating the lie of reincarnation: Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintism, New Age, etc. The only way to heaven is faith in Christ and that His shed blood washes away our sin. John 14:6, Acts 4:12. Satan says to get to heaven, your good deeds must out-weigh your bad deeds. The good deeds do not cancel out the bad. The evil is still there and is not erased by good deeds. God is righteous and will not allow sin in His presence. "For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9.

Here is what Satanists truly believe, especially the higher-ups: Satan teaches them the lie that, after the crucifixion, Jesus was chained to a rock in hell. The big lie. Satan says that up in heaven, God the Father and the Holy Spirit plan to rescue Jesus at the Battle of Armageddon. Supposedly, they will get on a white horse and lead an army of Christians from heaven to attack Satan. They are taught that in this battle, Satan kills God, destroys heaven, and puts all the Christians in hell. They also believe that Satan and his high priest and priestesses will rule the earth and Hell. And for fun, the Satanists will get to go down and torment the Christians in the lake of fire. This is what Satanist have been taught by Satan who is the father of all liars. John 8:44

Jesus Christ will attack Satan's armies and slaughter them at the Battle of Armageddon. Then He will take over the governments of the world. Rev. 19:13-16. Satan is finished and is cast into the lake of fire and the untold millions who believed Satan's lies join him. When the devil bows before Christ... the Satanist will go insane... they will realize they were betrayed... and throughout eternity they will gnash their teeth in pain and curse Satan in the flames of hell. Phil 2:9-11.

I have a question for the Christian Rock critics. Our Lord Jesus Christ went into the desert for 40 days to be tempted. Satan was allowed to throw EVERYTHING HE HAD at Jesus during that period. Satan knew full well that his eternal destiny was at stake. He knew what the horror of his fate if he were to fail. This was not his last chance to destroy Jesus, but it was one of his best chances. His attack would have been coordinated with every skill he had at his command. If the critics are right, one of satan's greatest assets would be his music. If this is so:

Why didn't satan tempt Jesus with music?

One rather insidious way that the critics use to support their allegation that Christian rock is satanic involves an un-named missionary's rebellious teenage kids playing Christian rock to a primitive tribe somewhere, and they instantly recognize it as demon music. Over the years, I have heard many variations on this theme, with the primitive tribe being, at times, in Africa, in India, or in South America. I would believe it happened one time, but for this same incident to happen in exactly the same way in some many places --- ?

Here is one such quote:

Perhaps you are wondering, can you really support that quote? My answer is yes. I have a video interview with a missionary that does just that! I offer this transcript of the interview with Iver Greenslade -- A.B.W.E. (Association of Baptist For World Evangelism) Missionary
When we first came up here (from the mission field) and heard the Rock Music, when it first came out, my wife and I looked at each other and said this is something we have been hearing all along. This is nothing new to us. It sounds just like the jungle music. I remember one furlough going back and we took some tapes out. Our children had slipped one of these contemporary Christian music tapes, Christian Rock. Shall we put it in quotation marks? Really there is no such thing as Christian Rock. Rock is rock and it is connected to Spiritism. When our children played that tape, suddenly the brethren wanted to know why we were playing the music of the demons. They recognized it right away.
All of this contemporary Christian music as they call it, the people who are in Animism recognize it right away as their demonism music. You will find that this [rock] music and Animism is the same in the Amazon Jungle as it is in North America. It is all related to Spiritism.

I am very tempted to call their bluff on this one. All of these years, I have wanted specifics. I am always willing to name every source, name names, document dates and times, etc. - unlike the critics. Finally, here, they give a name. Its about time. But you notice - only HE has the video, we are supposed to take his word for it. Notice also how biased this supposed missionary already was against the music "shall we put it in quotation marks". Also - he groups all CCM with Christian rock. The two are not synonymous. CCM refers to an entire genre of music, while Christian rock is a branch of CCM. I wish these people would know their material.

Actually, I have no doubt that there is a chance a beat or a song sounded like a song which a primitive tribe is familiar with. There are almost an infinite number of melodies, harmonies, etc. But the number of possible rhythms / beats is limited realistically by the length of a musical bar. Perhaps you are most familiar with the 4:4 bar. If you took music in school, or studied a musical instrument, you should now know what a musical bar it. It is a small, repetitive unit embedded within the music that gives it structure. It roughly corresponds to a second in real time. So if you have 4:4 beat, you have divided the second into 4 equal pieces, or 0.25 seconds (the bottom number). The top number is the number of notes played during the second. If it is not the same as the bottom number, some notes have to last twice as long to make up the difference.

A lot of variations are possible using "half notes", etc. But the fundamental beat is preserved through the song. While it is possible to have bizarre combinations such as 37:128, the range of motion of human hands and musical instruments pretty much limits you to ____:16. Doing any motion 16 times a second is difficult. The human eye cannot even follow motion faster than 30 times a second, so it would be hard to perform such music. Also, the bottom number is almost always a power of 2: 2,4,8,16. Assuming the top number can be almost anything up to the bottom number, you have 16 * 4, or 64 combinations of beats. This means that there is a one in 64 chance of ANY song, not just Christian rock, matching the tribal beats. Of course, the tempo of a song can be increased or decreased, which is probably why Christian hymns have not triggered this response.

Incidentally - if you want to find a song with a REALLY fast tempo, I invite you to try to play this! This is NOT a Christian rock song, it is a portion of Handel's Messiah. If you have ever heard this passage, you are plunged abruptly into this section where the violins are sawing away at 16 times per second! This is 50% faster than the Guiness record holder for the fastest "rapper" in the world, who got out almost 600 syllables in 55 seconds, a comparatively miserable 11 per second. So if you think fast, frenzied music is of the devil, better think again! I am surprised the violin bows don't saw right through the violins on the Messiah ---

I am NO MUSICIAN - professional musicians - please help here!!!

Here are some other scriptures that they try to use in support of their assertion that Christian rock music is of the devil.

Scripture 1

I Corinthians 10:20 I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

This is a classic case of prooftexting. The complete passage is:

15. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16. Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. 18. Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19. Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. 22. Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

This passage is talking about combining the Lord's supper with an ancient pagan feast of food sacrified to idols. I am afraid that this is all too common a problem in the church today. I am NOT talking about Christian rock music. I am talking about the pagan festival of Ishtar. Every parent of a young child lets that child hunt for "Easter" eggs on the day that should be reserved for the blessed ressurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. WARNING: The following information is from a practicing pagan's web page. I will not give the URL here, but will provide it to spiritually mature believers who email me.

3. March 21 and the Vernal Equinox... Ostara* (os ter uh) the festival marking the start of Spring; and if you are into Astrology, you might note this is the first day of Aries, first Zodiacal Sign. This fire festival celebrates the Mother Earth's fertility and return of the God (Sun). A time of new beginnings, and reproduction... the day of Esther who dances with bunnies about her feet and an egg in one hand. When the god Pan, dances with her and together they encourage the Rites of Spring. .....*Also celebrated as Eostar; and of course the better know Easter! Some will celebrate the astrological timing as Lady Day, and then the next Full Moon as Ostara. Old date being March 25th. Fertility symbols of bunnies and eggs carried over into the present celebrations. .....Now how the heck did egg-laying bunnies show up? Well the Lady Eostar had a pet bird who laid eggs for her, but one day Eostar turned her bird into a rabbit... who continued to lay eggs. Some stories say She was angry at Her bird, other say it was just a curious whim.

You bring this abomination into the church, and let your kids practice it??? Un-Godly, Un-Holy!!! Clean up your own act, then come and talk to me about Christian rock music.

Normally, these scriptures don't relate to each other, but the second scripture builds on my point.

Scripture 2

They feared the LORD, yet served their own gods; according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away. 41 So these nations feared the LORD, yet served their carved images; also their children and their children's children have continued doing as their fathers did, even to this day. (2 Ki 17:33 NKJV)

I won't quote the entire passage here, because it is lengthy. It is an interesting passage talking about how the King of Assyria, after carrying off the Hebrews to slavery, had a problem. Conquering a nation inevitably gives you control over land and buildings, as well as the people. If you take all the people out, natural deterioration will set in rapidly. The King of Assyria knew that the farm land would revert to weeds, and the buildings would eventually collapse without constant maintenance. So he brought in his own subjects to live in the land the Hebrews had occupied. Naturally, these people worshipped their own Gods. The Lord could not stomach this and sent lions in to devour some of them. This got the attention of the King, who decided to try to appease the Lord by incorporating His rituals into all the others. This did not work, of course - the Lord was NOT appeased.

The point here is that the people being talked about were not Hebrews. They were pagans who had no spiritual understanding at all. THEY HAD NOT BEEN "SAVED". The fear of the Lord talked about in the reference above is NOT Godly fear, it was being afraid - because the lions were wandering around. There is a BIG difference in having the fear of the Lord and merely being afraid of Him.

Most young people were not actively involved in satan worship when they got saved. On the other hand, because they were not servants of Jesus Christ, every area of their life was under control of satan. Therefore, the assumption that their music was of satan is a valid assumption. If those young people, after being saved, have a problem with Christian rock because they associate it with secular rock, they should abstain. On the other hand, there are a substantial number of young people, perhaps the vast majority, that see a BIG distinction between the two - refusing to listen to secular rock. They are fanatically committed to Christian rock ONLY, and often suffer a lot of ridicule for it. Now, if Christian rock WERE the same thing as secular, these young people would freely listen to both.

Scripture 3

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. {14} And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. {15} Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. (2 Cor 11:13-15 NKJV)

Here is the complete passage:

1. I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. 2. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. 3. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 5. But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." 6. I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. 7. Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? 8. I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. 9. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. 10. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine. 11. Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! 12. And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

This passage is talking about people who preach a different Christ. These are false prophets and teachers who needed (and still need) to be purged from the church. You cannot apply this passage to a musical style - it is talking specifically about somebody preaching heresy. If the lyrics of Christian rock music preach heresy, it is no longer "Christian" by definition, and I would be the first to say it does not belong in the church. No Christian should be listening to non-Christian rock. Period.

Scripture 4

Their land is also full of idols; They worship the work of their own hands, That which their own fingers have made. (Isa 2:8 NKJV)

A couple of extra verses will help here:

6. You have abandoned your people, the house of Jacob. They are full of superstitions from the East; they practice divination like the Philistines and clasp hands with pagans. 7. Their land is full of silver and gold; there is no end to their treasures. Their land is full of horses; there is no end to their chariots. 8. Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.

God's chosen people are being described as in a pretty serious state of rebellion. The thing that is interesting to me is that the focus of these verses is on MATERIALISM as well as spiritualism. There is absolutely no mention of music anywhere, unless you try to make it synomymous with "idols". The literal Hebrew translates idol, even in the King James. There is no implication of music. Therefore - this passage cannot apply to Christian rock.

Scripture 5

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is NO TRUTH in him. When he speaketh a LIE, he speaketh of his own: FOR HE IS A LIAR, AND THE FATHER OF IT. John 8:44

I really can't reproduce the entire passage, because it goes on for chapters. The setting is the temple court, and the teachers of the law and the Pharisees are challenging Jesus, trying to trip him up so they can arrest and kill him. The little portion I reproduce is probably the only part that Jesus himself initiated - a lot of the rest of it is His response to their well thought out intellectual snares. Here is that portion of the passage in a better translation:

39. "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. 40. As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41. You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." 42. Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46. Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?

I have to ask at this point - what is the possible relevance to Christian rock artists or their fans? I have seen more than one critic try to equate us with Pharisees. This is sort of amusing, because it was the Pharisees that resisted new ideas - like Jesus being the Son of God, and later the blood atonement of Jesus for sin. They resisted Jesus instead of welcoming Him, because He was a threat to their entrenched power and authority structure. They were puffed up and arrogant in their own reighteousness, and did not want to hear about repentance and grace. They had a set of comfortable rules that they lived by, and woe to anyone caught breaking them. They also were concerned that if people followed Jesus - the donations would not be coming to THEM. Folks - that sounds like the critics to me. We, the Christian rock fans, are introducing new and creative forms of ministry, that shakes their power structure. Traditional churches have a lot to lose if Christian rock displaces traditional music:

Scripture 6

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? (1 Corinthians 10:21-22).

I have actually covered this scripture in another essay. The other essay is my plea to critics not to enter the "pro" side of the site, for their own sake. This is a verse (out of context) from the "eating meat offered to idols" passage. When I talk about the idol meat passage, I tell them that Christian rock music IS different from idol meat. Paul can command Christian believers to abstain from the meat for the weaker brother, because there are alternatives. I cannot abstain from Christian rock for the weaker brother, because it is the only style of music to which I can worship in Spirit and in Truth. It is practiced in my fundamentalist, Bible believing, Bible teaching church. My responsibility, then, in exercising my freedom, is to see to it that I do not cause the weaker brother to stumble. The best way to do this is to keep them from reading this site, and to keep them from close fellowship with me where they will encounter the music.

When all else fails ----

--- the subborn, stiff-necked, rebellious Christian rock critic will invariably sink to an argument such as "well, it sounds satanic - that is enough for me". I am sorry, but it is NOT enough to me. I have to ask - what exact combinations of instruments, pitches, rhythms, and vocal sounds are satanic, and which are not? What is the dividing line? Ultimately, the only answer they can come up with, and the only answer possible, is that it is subjective. The WORD OF GOD is NOT SUBJECTIVE. It is not experiential. It is transcendant truth, and all issues must be resolved through it - not subjective experiences. Period. I am not interested in somebody's opinion of what a given piece of music sounds like to them.

In researching this, I tried to find "satanic examples" of Christian rock. I really can't recall anything in a Christian rock song that "sounds satanic". I have my subjective judgement, too - so I did the next best thing. I looked for examples in secular rock. The Christian rock critics will probably jump on me at this point - saying I listen to secular rock. No - I remember this example from the days BEFORE the Lord convicted me that secular rock music was wrong. The most satanic sound I could find occurs in the song "Dream On" by Aerosmith. It happens near the end of the song, right after one of the lowest bass notes I have heard in any recorded music. The artist screams "dream on" several times in a really satanic sounding voice. Only one problem - this song has the same basic message as the vanity chapter in Jeremiah:

Dream On
every time that I look in the mirror
all these lines on my face getting clearer
the past is gone
it went by like dusk to dawn
isn't that the way
everybody's got their dues in life to pay

yeah, I know nobody knows
where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
you got to lose to know how to win

half my life's in books' written pages
live and learn from fools and from sages
you know it's true
all the things come back to you

sing with me, sing for the years
sing for the laughter and sing for the tears
sing with me, if it's just for today
maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

dream on, dream on, dream on,
dream yourself a dream come true
dream on, dream on, dream on,
and dream until your dream comes true
dream on (7x)

Oops! The lyrics even speak of the reality of God and an afterlife. What is my point? The point is that I took the most satanic sound I could remember from my "rock and roll" days - and believe me I know a LOT of songs - and the satanic sound had NOTHING to do with the message of the song. It is a pretty good song overall - it gets young people to thinking about the passage of time, their youth will not last forever - what are they going to do about it? Do I recommend the song? NO!!! There are Christian rock songs with the same message that direct the listener to THE answer - Jesus Christ, instead of merely asking questions and telling you to dream until your dreams come true. Is their a relationship between the so-called satanic sound and the message of the song? NO!!! Satan does NOT want young people asking the questions and facing the realities in this song. He wants them over-sexed, over-drugged, and oblivious to their wasted lives.

I have a few scriptures of my own to add to the "is Christian rock is satanic" question:

22. Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23. All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" 24. But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." 25. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27. And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28. But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. -- MT 12:22-28

22. And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub ! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons." 23. So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan? 24. If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. --- Mark 3:22-26

14. Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15. But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." 16. Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. 17. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. 19. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. --- Luke 11:14-21

THREE TIMES the Bible records this incident. If somebody repeats something three times to you - is it important??? Especially God in His Word! I include these scriptures here because the Christian rock critics have NEVER been able to answer the question: what about the people who get saved at Christian rock concerts! Dial the Truth claims that it is due to other factors outside the concert, yet I have testimonies from people who say the music alone was the biggest single factor in their salvation. Granted, that is subjective and experiential - but I do NOT want to get into the mode of analyzing people's salvation to make sure it is "valid". I am not talking about obvious cases of believers living in apostasy. I am talking about the Christian teenager or young adult who professes Jesus Christ in an active, public way - and demonstrates a walk by a lifestyle that imitates Christ.

Praise God for converts in Christian rock music! Two of my announcers were among the converts. As a producer - I was faced with a crisis. It is hard to get kids to do radio - to make a committment of their time every week without fail to be on the air. Even worse - my show was scheduled at the same time as kids traditionally like to socialize. So when I found people who were willing to make the committment, stay within the musical guidelines, and conduct themselves in a professional manner, they were more valuable than gold. I was surprised when two of them told me that they were not Christians when they started doing the show. They just believed in the clean music as opposed to the world's music. This is very significant to me, because it means that there IS a difference that even non-Christian kids can detect. More important, though, was the music itself being the primary witnessing tool that led my announcers to Christ. According to Dial the Truth (see link above), this is not possible. Yet neither girl was in a church at the time. Both are living for Christ now and active in their churches. When I moved away from the area, I left them the CD's that helped them find the Lord.

I was not a convert through the music, but secular rock held my walk with the Lord back for many years before I made the switch to Christian rock. My flesh fought the change - the Holy Spirit within me knew full well the benefits of Godly Christian rock as opposed to Godless secular rock - and I yielded to the Holy Spirit. I have NOT been sorry, and the fruit in my own life has been phenomenal.

If the music were really glorifying satan, as some critics contend, then the fruit of Christian rock should be converts to satan - NOT CHRIST. Satan is very displeased when somebody gets saved - and I can only assume that he will work hard to keep unsaved teenagers away from Christian rock - where they will hear the gospel. And satan IS working hard - through the critics.
