DAVE RUSSELL – Sax, Flute, Piccolo and that Cool Thing

Dave Russell hails from “BUICK TOWN” Flint, Michigan, and got a great start in his career by being exposed to a wealth of music at an early age.  Home life surrounded him with recordings of jazz greats to attending live performances of many talented Flint area musicians. He
first took up clarinet and soon led him to performing with a neighborhood rock band.  Since the sax sounded best for arock setting, alto sax was played followed later by the flute.

His initial experiences with small groups outside of school led to his studies in music theory and composition.  His graduation from high school included a strong foundation of performance, jazz improvisation, composition and arranging. Dave spent two years at Michigan State University studying composition and instrumental techniques for both jazz and formal applications. In 1978, Dave continued his music composition and jazz studies at Arizona State University.

Sparked by a strong interest in modern twentieth century music, Dave has written for a large variety of musical styles and instrumental combinations. His local experience covers rock, theater, jazz, blues and rhythm and blues. In addition to working with many fine local Phoenix area musicians,
he was a member of Small Paul and Drivin’ Wheel  for 12 years.

As Dave so eloquently proclaims……………

“My background, together with partner “Master Blaster” Dave Axton helps create the high-octane rocket fuel that propels COLD SHOTT into the wild expanses of possibility without
incinerating the bridge of tradition that ties the rhythm to the blues”.
