TIM MATTESON
– Sax, Flute, everything horn


Tim Matteson received his Bachelor of Music (Saxophone Performance) and Bachelor of Music Education from Northern Arizona University in 1992 and
received his Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Grand Canyon University in May of 2003.
Tim is currently the Director of Bands at Thunderbird High School in Phoenix, Arizona and has been on the
faculty as an instructor at the NAU Summer Music Camps in Flagstaff and at the Music in the Bradshaws music camps in Prescott. He was the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Youth Band Director from 1997 to
2001, and has appeared as a clinician and adjudicator for numerous jazz festivals throughout the
state of Arizona.
In addition to his educational pursuits, Tim is also an active
performer and composer. His original piece entitled “Royal Suite for Alto Saxophone
and Piano” was recently published and is now available for purchase
through Smooth Stone Publications (Tucson). He has been a regular member of the
Phoenix-based band Cold Shott and the Hurricane Horns since 2004 and has performed
with many outstanding groups including Limbs Akimbo, Warsaw, Tommy Dukes, Danny Rhoades & the
Messengers, the Mike Vax Big Band, the MCC
Monday Night Big Band, and the Temptations.

Tim has remained active in Arizona music and professional associations including
the International
Association for Jazz Education, the Arizona Band and Orchestra
Directors Association, and the National Education Association. He has held several leadership positions in
the Arizona Band & Orchestra Directors Association and is currently the
residing President for the Arizona Association for Jazz Education.
Tim’s addition to the band helps strengthen a focus on a
big band sound when we added The Hurricane Horns back in 1992!!
