There are many coats of arms that have been granted to people with the surname "Savary" (or its various other spellings). The one portrayed here appears to be the one to which I am heir. Details and explanations appear below the Coat of Arms. The artwork for this rendering was done by Matt Wilson of Heraldic Arts. (His homepage is http://www.demon.co.uk/heritage/heraldry/.) |

The blazon or description of the arms above is "Paly of six argent and vert, a chief sable. Crest: a hand holding a chapeau between two branches of laurel in orle, all ppr." The "paly of six" indicates the six vertical bars on the shield, and "argent and vert" are the colors white and green. Argent literally means silver, but the traditional portrayal is white. "A chief sable" is the black band across the top of the shield. Sable literally refers to a type of fur, but is traditionally portrayed as the color black. The motto, Nosce Teipsum, means Know Thyself. This coat of arms was displayed in the Annapolis Royale Museum in Nova Scotia as part of a display of arms belonging to local families. My ancestors settled in that area following the American Revolution when, despite having fought on the Colonist side of the dispute, they decided to remain with the Crown after all. |
