Meals at the IFC Shelter
The Inter-Faith Council for Social Services was established in 1963 by a core of volunteers. These were primarily ministers and womens group members from the community who saw the needs of the poor and homeless in Chapel Hill not being adequately met. Assistance has included counseling, food distribution, housing assistance and many other services delivered as needed and identified.
The operating principles have changed very little since the Council was charted in 1966.
Over the years the agency has grown to include hundreds of volunteers, and a staff of 30 who try to help wherever they are needed. In 1982, the Community Kitchen was opened on November 1 in space donated by the Masonic Lodge on Rosemary Street. A more detailed history can be found at the IFC Web.
Community Church has many members who volunteer their time and talents both at the walk-in offices on Main Street in Carrboro, at the Homeless Shelter, on Rosemary Street and at Project Homestart. We also provide cooks and serving several times a month.
There are sign-up sheets in the Community Church Commons near the office door if you are interested in helping.
The Social Concerns committee also collects non perishable food on the second and fourth Sundays for the IFC. Any of the contact people or members of the Social Concerns Committee can talk to you about the Inter-Faith Council if you are interested in other volunteer opportunities.
