Welcome to my Steve Kimock Tune Database, Version 2.1. I've attempted to catalogue names and composers for tunes that Steve has played within the Steve Kimock Band (SKB), the defunct band KVHW (and KWH[whatever] incarnations). Just recently I've added Zero tunes using the late Doug Greene's database that he emailed me in 2004 or so. I'm also doing a little bit on the "who ever shows up" Steve Kimock & Friends" (SK&F). To go directly to the database just click here. The most recent version of SKB (as of January 2006) includes, according to the Kimock web site www.kimock.com, "visionary guitarist/composer" Steve Kimock (Zero, KVHW, Other Ones), drummer extraordinaire Rodney Holmes (The Brecker Brothers, Joe Zawinul Syndicate, Santana, Wayne Shorter) with Reed Mathis on bass (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) and keyboard player Robert Walter (Greyboy All-Stars)." It is anybody's guess what SKB will look like next given the numerous individual projects of the present members. The band has had a fluid membership including on guitar Mitch Stein and Banana, on drums Alan Hertz, Jimmy Sanchez and Prairie Prince, on keyboards Jim Kost, Tom Coster and Pete Sears, on bass Bobby Vega, Arne Livingston, Leo Traversa, Richard Hammond and Alphonso Johnson and a host of sit-ins on various instruments. If anybody has a complete list, let me know. |

| For information on the various bands that Steve has been a part of over the years go to an archive of the Flok.org site at the Wayback Machine. You may have to click on "Home" then "Kimock" and the "History" drop down box. A long strange trip its been! This project is made somewhat difficult by the casual way that tune names are often handled by Kimock and Company. A new tune gets put on the set list using a temporary moniker and then the name changes later. An example would be the "C Blues - Sea Blues - If You Only Knew" confusion that caused much controversy in its day. How "Mozambique" became "Elmer's Friggin Fudd" and then "Elmer's Revenge" is beyond me. In addition more often than not the average fan may never know who wrote a tune the band performs. Did Steve write it? How about Rodney? Now they are playing a number of Robert Walter tunes. Or in the past Alan, Ray or Bobby? I tend to credit the full band with the composition unless I know otherwise (particularly true with KVHW). There is also the issue of changing credits. For example, on the Zero album "Nothin' Goes Here" Tongue n' Groove is listed as a "S. Kimock, G. Anton, M. Fierro, Banana" composition while the new SKB disc lists it as Kimock alone. I don't think there is anything sinister about this. I just think Kimock and compadres were a little less organized and professional in Zero and KVHW than now. At this stage I've updated the SKB tunes (again as of January 2006) and added the Zero stuff from Doug but I haven't updated it much. It's missing a fair number of tunes. I've only begun the task of adding SK&F. I'll get there at some point. |

A couple of years ago I
got
some help from Steve through the kind efforts of Doug Greene. So I
finally confirmed that the pesky "High and Lonesome" is a
Kimock
composition. I've been able to identify many of the tunes and the
composer(s) but there are still some blanks. I want to give credit
where credit is due. If you see where you can help then be my guest at my email address. If you would like a copy of the database in Evil Empire Excel format just click here. If you want to save it to your local hard drive, right click on the link and choose "Save Target As." Usually the Excel file will be more up-to-date than the web listings. Finally thanks to the folks who gave me permission to use their photos. It you have cool ones you want to donate just send 'em over. |
