| Lived in Walnut township at time of father's death.4 Taken from obituary: "The presence of old friends from many walks of life and beautiful tributes marked the funeral service of Sam White, 73, which was held yesterday afternoon at the Cook & Weber Mortuary, evidence of the high esteem in which he was held in this community, his home since a young man. During the service, Miss Helen Opie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Opie and a niece of Mr. White sang, 'I've Done My Work,' by Carrie Jacobs Bond and a quartette consisting of Mrs. Leland Brown, Miss Opie, Lawrence Gunn and Martin Hall, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Dodd, also sang. Rev. Alva C. Brown, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge. As the funeral procession reached the cemetery, it was met by members of the Knights Templar lodge in uniform who escorted the hearse to Mr. White's final resting place. The Knights Templar also conducted the service at the grave. Pall bearers were Harry Gagelman, L. B. Wilcox, Fred Hans, Chester Sloan, Fred Hemker and Roscoe Moore, close friends. Mr. White had been caretaker at the Great Bend cemetery the last 25 years and because of his pleasant disposition and his desire to please those who had friends or relatives buried there, he had formed acquaintances over a wide territory, these in addition to the many friends he had in Great Bend and Barton county. He was kindly, fair in his business dealings and a good and loving father and husband. Following are the out-of-town residents who were here for his funeral service: George Harper of Dodge City, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. D. Shuler of St. John, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Osburg of Kinsley, Mrs. George Durand, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Durand and MRs. Lawrence Leiker of Hoisington, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cook, MR. and Mrs. J. F. Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. John Becker and Mrs. Louis Novotny of Bushton, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. O. Williams and family of Rozel and Miss Hazel Fromong and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Fromong of Rozel. The following account of his life was read by Rev. Brown: Samuel John White, son of Thomas and Elizabeth White, was born at Rockland, Ontonagon county, Michigan, Oct. 24, 1864 and passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Will C. Cook in Great Bend February 1, 1938, at the age of 73 years, three months and seven days. In the fall of 1878, Mr. White came, with his parents, to Kansas and settled in Walnut township where he lived until 1908 when he moved with his own family to Great Bend. He was united in marriage to Maria Louisa Pascoe October 10, 1890. These children were born to them: Louisa Maria Mirick, who preceded him in death in 1931, Mrs. Ethel Stevenson and Mrs. Velma Cook, both of Great Bend, by whom he is survived, also four grandchildren, Elwyn and Jeanene Cook of Great Bend, and Evelyn and Robert Mirick of Minot, N. D. Mrs. White passed away in 1920 and after keeping his home for two years, after her death, Mr. White made his home with the daughter, Mrs. Will Cook. In early boyhood, he became a Christian and united with the Methodist church near his home in Walnut township. On moving to Great Bend, his membership with that of the family was transferred to the First Methodist church of this city to which he belonged at his death. Mr. White was the last survivor of his family, his brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. His life has been marked by a great devotion to his family and the interest in others. Mild-mannered, no one appreciated a clean joke better than he. He was a member of the Masonic bodies in Great Bend where he was held in high esteem. He made and held friends easily and a wide circle of acquaintances will miss his cheery word and friendly greeting. May God rest him in peace and quiet of His eternal home." | ||||||||||||
