| Misc. Notes | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| From the possession of Dorothea Rouse Earl, who received these notes on the Benjamin family from Lydia A. Wilkinson, descendant of Amanda Benjamin m. Wilkinson: "This is an authentic copy of a like paper made by and which is now in possession of Drake Benjamin and which bears the date Munroe County, June 28th, 1844. This copy was made on July 20th, 1878 by Robert Benjamin, his son. Captain Elnathan Benjamin (the 1st) was born January 13th, 1682 in Wailes, England. Died May 12th, 1758 at the age of 76 years. His daughter Hannah Benjamin was born 1704 - died May 13th, 1794 at the age of 90 years. Samuel Benjamin a son was born Dec. 23rd, 1706 - died Dec. 21, 1795 at the age of 89 years. [The 2nd] Captain Elnathan Benjamin a son was born 1709. His son Elnathan Benjamin the 3rd was the grandfather of Joe Earl and my father E. Elnathan Wilkinson. Elnathan Benjamin [the 3rd] the father was born Aug. 1st, 1783 - died in 1887 - 104 years old. Polly Willsey Benjamin the mother was born June 28th, 1792. The following are their children in regular order as to age. 1. Jennet Benjamin [Cobb] born Jan. 29th, 1806 2. Polly Benjamin [Earl] born Sept. 11, 1809 3. Cornelius Benjamin born July 16, 1811 4. Joseph Benjamin born Aug. 24, 1813 5. Charlotte Benjamin [Bostwick] born Mar. 14, 1815 - died 1878 6. Pauline Benjamin [Henry] born July 23, 1817 7. Drake Benjamin born Dec. 31, 1819 8. Martin Benjamin born Feb 16, 1823 9. Calvin Benjamin born Sept. 13, 1825 10. Amanda Benjamin [Wilkinson] born June 22, 1827 - my grandmother - died Dec. 14th, 1884 in Chicago. 11. Mary Ann Benjamin [Minger] born Feb. 9, 1829 12. Nancy Benjamin born Mar. 7, 1831 Twelve children in all. My grandmother Amanda Benjamin [Wilkinson] was born in Dresden, Washington Co., New York as were all her brothers and sisters. Her one child was Elmer(?) Elnathan Benjamin [the 4th] Wilkinson [my father] who was born May 27, 1846 at Whitehall, New York near Lake George. Died April 1923 at age 76 in California. My mother Susie E. Fletcher Wilkinson was born in Boston MA in July 1854. She married in July 30, 1873 - died October 1924 in California. Their children, all born in Chicago, are: Grace May Wilkinson, born May 17, 1874 - died Mar.(?) 3, 1875 Estelle May Wilkinson, born July 16, 1875 - died Nov. 4, 1941 in California Lydia A. Wilkinson, born Jan. 20, 1879 Drake Benjamin's children were: Anna [lived 1 yr & 9 months] Abel Ludlowetha(?) Robert born Oct. 1879 (?), one of my father's cousins, when grown lived at 27 Lewis St., New York City. My father was born at the foot of Lake George (Lake Champlain?) New York State. The Benjamins were clanish. Cornelius Willsey was the father of Polly Willsey (Benjamin) who was the mother of the 12 children of Elnathan Benjamin the 3rd. She also had a sister Hannah and two brothers Daniel and John. Hannah's children were Mercy (?), Harriet, William, Daniel, Duthan, Vera, Hiram, Samuel. John's children were Venice, George, Thomas, Ann, Eliza, David, Almon, Cornelius, John, Charles, Emeline, Sophia, and one died unnamed. Daniel's children were John, Abagail, Valentine, Orison & Orrin (twins), Lobrilla, Arvill (?), Caroline, Ellis, Laurie, Unity (?), Daniel, Jan. Notice the large families above. It must have been on the mother's side that they believed in large families and not on the Benjamin or the father's side. But the Benjamin family was a long lived family. You will have noticed perhaps that Captain Elnathan Benjamin 1st 76. His daughter 90. His son Samuel 89. Elnathan the 3rd 104 years. Elnathan Benjamin Wilkinson the 4th 76. Marian Benjamin (Hore) who lived in Columbus Ohio was my father's cousin. She had a son Walther Hore. I can't figure which of the twelve was her parent. Perhaps when Virginia Watson reads this account she can tell you what branch of the twelve children her mother and sister in San Francisco came from. I know Della's sister resembles my grand mother very much so she might have descended from one of the girls in the family. I knew a Cornelius Benjamin in Chicago and his wife. They had one little boy named Cornelius so they probably were the son and grandson of Cornelius Benjamin of the 12. L.A.W." ================ Gloria Wall Bicha has dates, born abt 1782 Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, died before 1865.51 "Three brothers, Elnathan, Walter, and Duthan, settled the shore of South Bay, Wash.
